Patronage festival of the small village on the Prims on the first Sunday in October
In Saarland, patronage kirmes festivals are deeply rooted – they commemorate the patron saint of the parish and have been both a religious festival and a village community celebration for generations. In Körprich, a district of Nalbach in the Saarlouis district, the festival of Archangel Michael is celebrated on the first Sunday in October.
Traditionally on the first Sunday in October. For 2026, this is expected to be Sunday, October 4, 2026 (St. Michael and All Angels falls on October 4th in 2026, which is also the first Sunday in October). The exact program will be announced shortly by the Nalbach parish community and the municipality.
The parish church of St. Michael was built in 1926 under Pastor Leo Montada. It is a cruciform hall church in an abstract historicist style with Gothic elements. The church tower is the widely visible landmark of Körprich. Archangel Michael, the heavenly commander and vanquisher of the dragon, is the patron saint of the parish – St. Michael's Day on September 29th accordingly falls on the first weekend in October.
The festival day begins with the high mass in the parish church of St. Michael, often accompanied by the church choir or the local music association.
After the service, the community moves to Gebrüder-Montada-Platz – the religious and cultural center of the district. Here, local clubs organize the catering: bratwurst, schwenker (grilled meat skewers), cakes, and drinks.
The Michaelshalle, built in 1978, is the focal point of the further kirmes events. Dance evenings or stage programs usually take place here. Small amusement rides or shooting galleries may be added depending on the year.
Körprich has about 2,000 inhabitants and is located in the Nalbachtal valley on the Prims river. The place is characterized by its village atmosphere – commuters work in Saarlouis or Lebach, and clubs shape social life. The Michaelsbergkapelle (a second, older church on the slope) and the parish church of St. Michael are the most important buildings in the community.
Patronage kirmes festivals like the one in Körprich are less tourist attractions today and more community anchors. Those who visit the kirmes experience the Saarland away from the glossy brochures – with a small festival tent, familiar faces, and the naturalness with which tradition is maintained.
The patronage kirmes St. Michael in Körprich has followed the same schedule for generations: festive service in the parish church, followed by a club festival at Gebrüder-Montada-Platz and at the Michaelshalle. The exact program schedule for 2026 will be announced shortly by the parish and the municipality of Nalbach.
