Ten days of Kirchweih festivities in the Gold-beating City
The Schwabacher Herbstkirchweih is one of the largest Kirchweihen (church consecration festivals) in Middle Franconia. It forms the festive highlight of the city's event series 'Schwabacher Herbst' and attracts visitors from the entire Nuremberg metropolitan area every year. The independent city of Schwabach, known as the Gold-beating City for its gold leaf production, shows its most convivial side during the Herbstkirchweih.
The venues are Königsplatz and Martin-Luther-Platz right in the middle of the old town. Amusement rides for all ages are set up here—from the classic chain carousel and bumper cars to the Bayernturm and Musik-Express, as well as highlights like the 'Dancing Monster'. Booths for shooting games, roasted almonds, gingerbread hearts, and Franconian bratwurst stands line the area between the rides.
Parallel to the festival grounds, the Kirchweih market stretches through the historic city center: market stalls offering household goods, crafts, and regional specialties attract day visitors. The highlight for families is the Family Day with discounted ride prices and activities like face painting and glitter tattoos. On the open shopping Sunday, Schwabach's shops also open their doors.
The Herbstkirchweih traditionally opens with a Kirchweih procession and the ceremonial raising of the Kirchweih tree in front of the town hall, accompanied by traditional costume and music groups from the region. It is this mix of market atmosphere, public entertainment, and old Kirchweih tradition that makes the Schwabacher Herbstkirchweih unique—and known beyond the borders of Middle Franconia.
The Schwabacher Herbstkirchweih 2026 runs from September 18 to 27. It traditionally opens on Friday evening with the raising of the Kirchweih tree in front of the town hall and a procession through the old town. The festival grounds on Königsplatz and Martin-Luther-Platz will be supplemented with a few new rides compared to previous years; confirmed attractions include the Autoscooter Formel 1 (Roth) and the Music-Express »Staudenrausch«. On Sunday, September 20, the open shopping Sunday invites visitors to Schwabach's city center.
The detailed daily program will be published shortly before the festival begins on schwabach.de.
S-Bahn S2 Nuremberg–Roth, stop Schwabach (10-minute walk to Königsplatz). By car via the A6 (exit Schwabach-West or -Süd). Parking in the designated parking lots outside the festival area is recommended.
