Romantic Advent Market of the Goldbeater City at Königsplatz
Schwabach, a district-free city in the south of the Nuremberg metropolitan region, bears the nickname "Goldbeater City": For over 500 years, gold leaf has been produced here, and even today, Schwabach is home to several of the last gold leaf manufacturers in the world. The towers of the world-famous Frauenkirche in Dresden, as well as the dome of the Reichstag building in Berlin, are covered with Schwabach gold leaf. In Advent, this quiet tradition of gold craftsmanship combines with the warm light of the Christmas market at Königsplatz – an ensemble that makes the market one of the most atmospheric in the region.
At Königsplatz, the central market square of Schwabach's old town, a small city of lovingly decorated wooden houses emerges during the Advent season. Primarily non-profit associations and groups from Schwabach offer Christmas tree decorations, Christmas cards, candles, and other products that characterize the traditional Christmas market offerings. In addition, there is mulled wine, children's punch, Schwabach gingerbread, roasted almonds, sausages, and crêpes.
Like in Nuremberg, the Christ Child is a fixed part of the program in Schwabach. A young woman from Schwabach is chosen as the Schwabach Christ Child for two years and traditionally opens the market on the first weekend from the town hall balcony with a festive prologue. During the market period, the Christ Child visits senior citizens' homes, schools, and children's events.
A special feature that sets the Schwabach market apart among Franconian Advent markets is the floating of candle boats on the Schwabach – a small river that flows through the old town. On the Sunday of the second Advent weekend, children and families let homemade candle boats glide into the water – a unique and atmospheric custom.
The Schwabach Christmas Market is organized by the Verkehrsverein Schwabach e.V. and carried out in cooperation with the city's volunteer associations.
The 2026 Schwabach Christmas Market spans two Advent weekends. The second weekend (December 4th to 6th) begins with the opening by the Schwabach Christ Child from the town hall balcony. On Sunday, December 6th, the traditional floating of candle boats on the Schwabach takes place.
The third Advent weekend opens the market on Thursday, December 10th, and runs until Sunday, December 13th. Parallel to the Christmas market at Königsplatz, the Christmas Tree Market on Martin-Luther-Platz is open daily from December 4th to 24th. Regional choirs and brass bands perform at the market, and the nostalgic carousel for children operates daily.
Schwabach is located about 18 kilometers south of Nuremberg. Reachable in 15 minutes by S-Bahn S2 or regional train from Nuremberg Central Station (Schwabach station, 10 minutes walk to Königsplatz). By car via the A6 (Schwabach-Süd exit).
Admission to the Christmas market is free. Food, drinks, and goods are paid for on site.
Second and third Advent weekends, open from Thursday on the third Advent weekend.
