Over 90 Years of Open-Air Theatre at the Deister
The Deister-Freilicht-Bühne was built in 1934 in a former stone quarry – an example of the concept of natural stages popular in the 1930s, which deliberately moved theatre from enclosed halls to the outdoors. The stone quarry provides a natural acoustic backdrop; rocks, trees, and the slope give each performance a special setting. Today, the stage is run by volunteer actors and is a firm fixture on the cultural map of the Deister region.
Three In-House Productions in 2026
The Jungle Book – Family Musical (from May 24, 2026)
The season opens with a family musical based on Rudyard Kipling's classic. Mowgli, Baloo, Bagheera, and Shere Khan bring the jungle to the Deister stone quarry. Premiere: Sunday, May 24, 2026.
Jedermann (Premiere June 6, 2026)
Hugo von Hofmannsthal's classic about the death of a rich man – one of the most frequently performed German-language plays. In the unique atmosphere of the open-air stage, the play develops a special power. Premiere: Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The First Last Day – Comedy (Premiere July 11, 2026)
A contemporary comedy is the third play of the season. Premiere: Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Guest Performance: Musical Night by SET Musical Company (July 3, 2026)
On Friday, July 3, 2026, the SET Musical Company will be guests with their Musical Night – a revue show of major musical successes. The guest performance is already sold out.
