Atmospheric Advent market on the medieval village green in southern Berlin
When the Alt-Buckow village green switches to Advent mode in December, the medieval green transforms into a mini Christmas market: around two dozen wooden stalls, fairy lights in the linden trees, the warm glow from the windows of the 13th-century fieldstone church. The market is small, intimate, and explicitly non-commercial — setting it clearly apart from the large Christmas markets in Berlin's city center at Alexanderplatz or Gendarmenmarkt.
Artists from the neighborhood present music, dance, or other Christmas contributions on a small stage. The stalls offer Christmas decorations, gift ideas, candles, and handicrafts, complemented by food and drinks — mulled wine, hot chocolate, children's punch, gingerbread, stollen, bratwurst, and crêpes. Organizers are the working group Das sympathische Buckow e.V. and the Evangelical Church Community of Alt-Buckow.
Buckow is one of Berlin's most surprising neighborhoods — a medieval village green in the Neukölln district that has retained its village green form to this day. The Alt-Buckow village church, dating from the 13th century, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Berlin. The Advent market is the winter highlight of this neighborhood, one of several fixed dates (see also the Buckow Village Green Festival in summer and the Festival of Lights in Rudow). A Berlin Advent market for all those who want to avoid the huge spectacle.
For over thirty years, the Advent market has followed the same pattern: 1st Advent weekend, Saturday and Sunday, around two dozen stalls on the village green, mulled wine, handicrafts, and stage music. Exact dates and opening hours will be communicated one to two weeks before the market on berlin.de and via the church community.
The Alt-Buckow Advent Market 2026 is expected to take place on the first Advent weekend (November 28/29, 2026) on the Alt-Buckow village green, 12349 Berlin-Neukölln. Confirmation of exact times and the stage program will be provided by the organizer Das sympathische Buckow e.V. together with the Evangelical Church Community of Alt-Buckow a few weeks before the market — typically published on berlin.de and in the local Neukölln news.
The market is explicitly non-commercial and organized by volunteers. Stall fees go towards the next edition and social projects of the association.
Free admission. Food and drinks are paid for directly at the stalls. Stall revenues go towards the next edition and social projects of the association.
