Street food and party atmosphere on the Reden slag heap
The Reden experience site in Schiffweiler (Neunkirchen district) is one of the most spectacular industrial heritage sites in Saarland. After the end of hard coal mining, the former Reden colliery was transformed into a cultural and experience site – with a mining museum, concert arena, hiking trails, and the "Alm", a level plateau on the renatured slag heap. This is exactly where the organizers of Alm Event Gastro GmbH set up the Alm Food Festival once every summer.
The heart of the festival are the food trucks and street food stalls. Burgers and BBQ specialties, Asian wok dishes, Mediterranean mezze, Mexican tacos, vegan bowls, sweet specialties like crêpes and pancakes – as well as regional Saarland classics like Schwenker or Lyoner in modern interpretations are represented. The selection changes annually but is consistently curated: quality over quantity.
The street food program is accompanied by live music – smaller bands during the day, DJ sets in the evening. The Reden slag heap has its own atmosphere: you stand in an industrial enclave, look out over green forest, hear bass rhythms, and smell what's sizzling at the food truck next door. The sunset here is the best argument for arriving late.
Reden is one of the most important symbols of structural change in Saarland. Hard coal was mined here until 1995; today, the site is a cultural stage and houses, among other things, the Center for Biodiversity Documentation, the Mining Museum, and event areas. The Alm Food Festival is part of this cultural new beginning – a format that would not be conceivable without the slag heap.
The Alm Food Festival is not isolated: Alm Event Gastro GmbH uses the plateau for several formats over the summer – including the Back For Good Festival, Tropical Mountain, and La Fiesta on the Pentecost weekend, as well as the Reden Beer and Wine Festival in autumn. Those who get hooked have reasons to come back.
The festival takes place on the plateau of the Reden slag heap over two days. Food trucks form the main circle, complemented by a stage with live music and DJ sets. Admission to the food area is usually free. The plateau is managed by the municipality of Schiffweiler and the Reden experience site.
Specific food trucks and live acts will be announced in spring 2026 at alm-events.de. Other events of the Alm season (Pentecost: Back For Good, Tropical Mountain, La Fiesta) are listed there.
Admission to the food area is usually free; food and drinks are purchased directly at the truck.
By car via the A8 (Neunkirchen exit) or the B41, then follow signs for "Erlebnisort Reden". Parking available at the experience site; the ascent to the "Alm" is on foot (about a 10-minute climb up the slag heap). By public transport: Bus from Neunkirchen main station to Schiffweiler Reden.
Usually free admission to the food area. Individual concerts or themed festivals (Pentecost program) may require tickets – details at alm-events.de.
Sturdy footwear and possibly a warm jacket – it's breezier on the slag heap than in the valley. Sunset at 9:30 PM in June: arrive in good time. Those combining the weekend with an overnight stay will find hotels in Neunkirchen or Saarbrücken.
