A Social Christmas Market in the Stormarn District
Ahrensburg is a town of around 35,000 inhabitants in the Stormarn district — the affluent region surrounding Hamburg, nestled between Hamburg and Lübeck. The Workshop for People with Disabilities (WfBM) Ahrensburg operates a site here called Tatwerk, which offers employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Once a year — on the second weekend of Advent — Tatwerk opens its doors for the Ahrensburg Fir Magic: a small, family-friendly Christmas market with a clear social mission.
What Makes Fir Magic Special
Three elements distinguish the Ahrensburg Fir Magic from the average pre-Christmas market:
- Stall fees are waived — allowing exhibitors to offer small, fair prices and preventing a commercial atmosphere.
- All proceeds benefit educational and leisure projects for people with disabilities at the site. Those who shop, eat, and drink here directly fund inclusion and participation.
- The WfBM workshops present their own products — woodwork, ceramics, textiles, decorations — crafted by people with disabilities in the facility's workshops. A showcase of their work, highlighting their contribution.
The Program
Tatwerk is open both days between 12 PM and 6 PM. Visitors will find the following among the stalls:
- Extended handicraft market with festive decorations, handmade gifts, floristry, and jewelry
- Nordmann fir trees from Schleswig-Holstein, available for purchase on-site, with assistance for transport to your car
- Freshly prepared crêpes straight from the cart
- Homemade cakes and pastries
- Grilled specialties from the sausage stand
- Punch, mulled wine, and children's punch
- Products from the Woldenhorn School — the Ahrensburg-based school for children with special needs
- Visit from Santa Claus with small gifts for the children, professional childcare during the market
Why It's Worth Visiting
Visiting Fir Magic combines pre-Christmas atmosphere with a social touch. It's not a mega-market, but a deliberate format by an organization dedicated to the lives of people with disabilities. For families from Ahrensburg, Bad Oldesloe, Reinbek, and the entire Stormarn district, it's a welcome, family-friendly alternative to the large Christmas markets in Hamburg.
