Shooting Tradition for the Little Ones

Krumstedt is a municipality in the Amt Mitteldithmarschen within the Dithmarschen district, located in the heart of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. In this region, where shooting clubs and the preservation of traditions are deeply rooted, a special variant for children has also been established: the Kindervogelschießen.

What It Is

The traditional 'Vogelschießen' – a king shooting contest where participants shoot at a wooden bird – exists in many regions of Northern Germany. At the Kindervogelschießen Krumstedt, children experience a harmless variant (without real weapons, using balls or similar aids, depending on the community's custom) and are crowned Children's King and Queen.

Krumstedt is centrally located in the Dithmarscher Geest and March, east of Brunsbüttel and west of Albersdorf. The municipality is small, but club life is active — the volunteer fire department, the sports club, and the shooting tradition shape the annual calendar. The Kindervogelschießen is a prime example of how traditions in Schleswig-Holstein are consciously passed on to the next generation.
