Nordhastedt — Geest Village in Dithmarschen
Nordhastedt is a municipality with around 2,500 inhabitants in the Dithmarschen district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, located about 15 kilometers northeast of Heide on the Dithmarscher Geest. Like many villages in the region, social life in Nordhastedt is strongly characterized by club activities — the Ring Riders' Association is one of the oldest and most active clubs in the village.
Ringreiten — Dithmarschen Riding Game
Ringreiten is a riding game common in Dithmarschen, North Frisia, and western Schleswig-Holstein: riders gallop under a crossbar stretched over the track and use a long wooden lance to stab a small metal ring out of its holder. The custom has been documented since the 19th century and is kept alive in many villages on the west coast to this day. Winners are proclaimed "King" or "Queen.".
Nordhastedt Format — Bicycle and Horse
The special feature of the Nordhastedt Ringreiten is the combination of two formats:
- Friday afternoon — Bicycle ring-stabbing for children, teenagers, and adults: instead of horses, participants ride bicycles under the bar and try to stab the ring with the lance. A low-threshold format that opens up the tradition to a broader audience.
- Saturday — Horseback ring-stabbing on the Nordhastedt sports field: the classic riding game with riders from the club and guest riders from neighboring clubs. Framed by a procession through the village.
Club Life
The organizer is the Ringreiterverein Nordhastedt, one of the most traditional clubs in the village. The club's events — King's proclamation, King's ball, club evening — are fixed dates in the village calendar and are cherished across generations. Anyone growing up in Nordhastedt inevitably comes into contact with Ringreiten.
