Walpurgis in the village centre — Maypole raising and bonfire with music band
April 30th — Walpurgis Night — is traditionally celebrated in North Germany with May bonfires and Maypoles. Bargenstedt, a small community in the Dithmarschen district, keeps this tradition alive: the Maifeuer (May bonfire) in the village square in front of Königs Gasthof has been a fixed date in the community's annual calendar for generations. The festival is jointly organised by the Bargenstedt Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Vogelschießerausschuss.
The programme begins at 7:00 PM in the village square. The Bargenstedt Music Band plays to welcome guests, and children recite May poems — a charming, intergenerational tradition. Afterwards, the Maypole is raised: men from the community work together to hoist the decorated pole upright, the music band plays along, and the assembled crowd applauds.
After the Maypole raising, the community walks together to the actual festival grounds, where the Maifeuer (May bonfire) is lit. The Volunteer Fire Brigade has piled up the wood beforehand — and ensures that everything runs safely. Bratwurst, beer, and soft drinks are sold at the stand. Proceeds go to the club activities of the fire brigade and the Vogelschießerausschuss.
Bargenstedt is located in the Amt Mitteldithmarschen, about 10 kilometres west of Heide, the district town of Dithmarschen. With around 1,500 inhabitants, it is a typical Geestland village — characterised by agriculture, with active club life and a fire brigade that forms the social backbone of the community. In addition to the Maifeuer, the community also organises the Brückenfest in July and the Erntefest (harvest festival) in September.
The 2026 edition follows the classic sequence, unchanged for generations. May poems by Bargenstedt children form the emotional start; the joint raising of the Maypole and the lighting of the bonfire follow. A simple, identity-forming festival — the whole village in one place.
