Traditional autumn ball in a country inn in Dithmarschen
For centuries, the Ernteball was an integral part of the village year in the North German marshlands: once the grain was harvested, the beets were cleared, and the fields were sown, the farming community would gather to celebrate the harvest. In Windbergen — a classic marsh village in Dithmarschen — this tradition is kept alive to this day.
The venue is the traditional Landgasthof „Zur Linde“ at Lindenstraße 4 — a classic North German village inn with a hall, which has hosted community events for decades. The hall can accommodate village festivals, weddings, and balls, and is the center of social life in Windbergen.
An Ernteball typically follows a program: welcome address by the mayor or the organizing association's board, dancing with a band or DJ, small performances by village clubs, a raffle with prizes from the region (sausage and ham packages, basketry, regional specialties), and of course, plenty of food and drinks. Anyone looking for a glimpse of authentic Dithmarschen village life will find it here.
Windbergen is located in the District of Dithmarschen, one of Germany's oldest peasant republics, whose agricultural tradition dates back to the Middle Ages. The municipality belongs to the Amt Mitteldithmarschen and is accessible via the neighboring towns of Meldorf (district town) and Heide (central town). In the district, the harvest festival (Erntedank) is celebrated in many places with festivals, harvest crown parades, and balls.
The Ernteball 2026 falls on the second weekend of October — the classic time after the harvest is complete and before the first frost. Starting at 8:00 PM, the village community gathers in the hall of Landgasthof Zur Linde to celebrate the harvested crops together.
Expect the usual mix of welcome, dance music, food, and conviviality. The event is primarily aimed at the village community and guests from the surrounding marsh villages of Dithmarschen, but is also open to visitors seeking an authentic North German village evening.
The exact daily program will be announced on the events page of the Windbergen municipality and via notices in the village.
Prices will be announced by Landgasthof Zur Linde (Tel. 04859 / 321). Tickets directly from the inn or via notices from the municipality. Reservations recommended — hall events in village inns are often booked well in advance.

An Ernteball is traditionally a more formal occasion — many guests wear festive attire. A suit or smart casual wear is recommended.
