Open-Air Cinema Against the Most Beautiful Cityscape in Franconia
As the sun sinks over the Mainfranken landscape behind the vineyards and the illumination of the Marienberg Fortress slowly flares up, Festungsflimmern begins. The fortress itself, for centuries the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg and today the city's landmark, becomes the natural backdrop behind the screen. On the Neutorwiese directly on the Main river, a short five-minute walk from the Alte Mainbrücke bridge, the Festungsflimmern team sets up their inflatable big screen, 1,000 seats (including 200 deckchairs), a bar, toilet trailers, and lighting installations every summer.
16 Evenings, 24+ Screenings
The 2026 program includes more than 24 events over 16 evenings: film highlights from international festivals, premieres, German productions, plus special events like yoga against the fortress backdrop, a brass band concert, and a comedy slam. The film selection ranges from current arthouse to commercial highlights and crowd-pleasers — with diverse film genres represented, from »On Swift Horses« and »Parthenope« to »Thunderbolts« and »Bridget Jones 4« and »Emilie Pérez«.
Sommerflimmern as an Extension
A new feature in 2026: Sommerflimmern as a second location. From July 23 to August 2, Festungsflimmern will feature a second, shaded stage on the bastion above the Umweltstation near Nautiland — with its own entrance on Niggelweg, 200 deckchairs, and the option to bring your own food. Together, both locations make Würzburg one of the most film-strong open-air cities in Southern Germany.
Atmosphere Instead of Multiplex
Anyone who has experienced an open-air cinema knows: it's not a replacement for the multiplex, but a unique experience in itself. Stars above the screen, a gentle breeze from the Main, the feeling that the whole city is sharing this summer evening — at Festungsflimmern, the unique backdrop of the fortress is an added bonus. With blankets, warm clothing, and the right glass of wine in hand, it's among the most beautiful summer nights Würzburg has to offer.
Festungsflimmern — edition 2026
The 2026 edition of Festungsflimmern presents over 16 evenings with more than 24 screenings and specials. The selection reflects the entire current film offering: recent cinema hits, international festival highlights, German productions, classic revivals.
The classic cinema program is complemented by special screenings with live accompaniment: yoga sessions against the fortress backdrop, a brass band concert, a comedy slam evening, and other specials. Tickets will be available online from mid-May 2026; deckchair spots (200 at the front) can be booked separately, with blanket spots behind. Additionally, the second location, Sommerflimmern, will take place on the bastion near Nautiland from July 23 to August 2.

Getting There
The Neutorwiese is located on the Main river, approx. a 5-minute walk from the Alte Mainbrücke bridge. Bus line 9 (stop: Festung) or on foot from Würzburg main station (15–20 minutes). By car, parking is available at the Marienberg Fortress. Entrance: via the Mainbrücke bridge and along the Main river.
Admission
Tickets available online from mid-May via the Festungsflimmern ticket page. 200 bookable deckchairs at the front (bookable separately), with blanket/picnic spots behind. Bringing your own food is prohibited, as are your own drinks (the bar finances the operation).
Tips
Bring a warm blanket and a sweater — even in midsummer, the nights can get cool. Booking a deckchair is recommended, especially for popular films. On-site culinary offerings: Flammkuchen in several varieties, popcorn, nachos, wine, beer, cocktails, sparkling wine. The cinema operates even in changeable weather — only cancelled in case of storms.
