About Schellenberger Kirtag

The Schellenberger Kirtag – also known as Schellenberger Dult – is the traditional patron saint's festival of the market town of Marktschellenberg in the Berchtesgaden region. For four days – Friday to Monday around St. Ulrich's Day (July 4th) – the historic town center transforms into a Bavarian festival mile with around 100 stallholders, amusement rides, a festival tent, and live music. Hofbräu beer, half chickens, schnitzel, and brass band music form the culinary and musical core. Marktschellenberg is located between Salzburg and Berchtesgaden, directly at the Almbachklamm gorge – its location makes the Kirtag an annual gathering point for locals, mountaineers, and summer vacationers from the border region of Upper Bavaria and Salzburg.

Patron Saint's Festival of St. Ulrich

The Schellenberger Kirtag is celebrated every year on the Sunday after St. Ulrich's Day (July 4th) – Ulrich of Augsburg is the patron saint of Marktschellenberg. Over the decades, the original patron saint's celebration has evolved into a classic Bavarian Kirtag, which now spans four days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

Dult with Around 100 Stalls

The Dult features around 100 stallholders and transforms the historic town center into a Bavarian market mile: carousel for children, swing boat, and shooting galleries for the youngest, plus market stalls with sweets, gingerbread, shoes, clothing, tools, and regional crafts. The market remains the heart of the festival throughout the four days.

Festival Tent on the Market Square

Bavarian inn cuisine is served in the festival tent at folk festival prices: Hofbräu beer, half chickens, schnitzel, and classic snacks. Live music by Bavarian bands, an Oktoberfest-style opening on Friday, and live bands on Saturday create the atmosphere; on Sunday (Kirtagssonntag), there's a morning pint with a concert and traditional competitions in the afternoon.

Marktschellenberg and the Berchtesgaden Region

Marktschellenberg is located in the southeasternmost corner of Bavaria, on the border with Austria. The market town is the starting point for the famous Almbachklamm gorge, one of Bavaria's most popular wild water gorges, and for hikes in the Berchtesgaden region. The Kirtag fits into a series of folk festivals in the region: Annafest in Marktschellenberg, Bergfest in Berchtesgaden, and folk festivals in Piding, Bad Reichenhall, and Ramsau.
