Traditional Kirtag with Dult in the Berchtesgaden Region
The Schellenberger Kirtag is celebrated every year on the Sunday after St. Ulrich's Day (July 4th) – Ulrich of Augsburg is the patron saint of Marktschellenberg. Over the decades, the original patron saint's celebration has evolved into a classic Bavarian Kirtag, which now spans four days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.
The Dult features around 100 stallholders and transforms the historic town center into a Bavarian market mile: carousel for children, swing boat, and shooting galleries for the youngest, plus market stalls with sweets, gingerbread, shoes, clothing, tools, and regional crafts. The market remains the heart of the festival throughout the four days.
Bavarian inn cuisine is served in the festival tent at folk festival prices: Hofbräu beer, half chickens, schnitzel, and classic snacks. Live music by Bavarian bands, an Oktoberfest-style opening on Friday, and live bands on Saturday create the atmosphere; on Sunday (Kirtagssonntag), there's a morning pint with a concert and traditional competitions in the afternoon.
Marktschellenberg is located in the southeasternmost corner of Bavaria, on the border with Austria. The market town is the starting point for the famous Almbachklamm gorge, one of Bavaria's most popular wild water gorges, and for hikes in the Berchtesgaden region. The Kirtag fits into a series of folk festivals in the region: Annafest in Marktschellenberg, Bergfest in Berchtesgaden, and folk festivals in Piding, Bad Reichenhall, and Ramsau.
The 2026 edition falls on the weekend around St. Ulrich's Day (July 4th). For four days – Friday to Monday – the historic market square and adjacent streets transform into a Bavarian festival mile.
The opening on Friday evening is classically in the Oktoberfest style with a DJ and beer tent atmosphere. Saturday brings a wine festival with local bands. Sunday is the actual Kirtagssonntag with a morning concert in the forenoon and traditional competitions in the afternoon. The "Blauer Montag" for businesses and authorities concludes the event.
Program changes will be announced via marktschellenberg.de and the Tourist Information.
