Grand Traditional Day of the Christmas Sharpshooters and Costume Societies in the Historic Market
The Trachten- und Schützenjahrtag in Berchtesgaden is one of the most significant traditional events in Upper Bavaria. Supported by Gauverband I, the United Christmas Sharpshooter Societies and the costume societies of the Berchtesgaden region gather for a grand celebration in the historic market of Berchtesgaden. The United Christmas Sharpshooters of the Berchtesgaden region were founded in 1925 – thus, the Jahrtag (annual commemoration) carries a tradition of almost a hundred years.
The day begins with the assembly of the societies, followed by the festive church service in the Collegiate Church and the Parish Church of Berchtesgaden. Afterwards, the grand procession sets off: from the Collegiate Church through the pedestrian zone, along Maximiliansstraße, to Luitpold Park and back. Over a thousand participants in historical costume march through the market, led by the music bands of Maria Gern, Berchtesgaden, Bischofswiesen, Königssee, and Ramsau.
Berchtesgaden is located in the Berchtesgadener Land district in the state of Bavaria, nestled in the Berchtesgaden Alps by Königssee lake. The Christmas Sharpshooters and costume societies shape the cultural identity of this region like hardly any other tradition. For visitors from all over the world, the Jahrtag is a rare opportunity to experience authentic Upper Bavarian traditions in all their dignity and splendor.
