39th edition — one of Stormarn's largest city festivals between the castle and the train station
The Ahrensburg City Festival has existed since the late 1980s, making it one of the most traditional city festivals in the Hamburg metropolitan region. The 39th edition will take place in 2026 — the festival format has established itself over the decades as the most important summer date in the city's event calendar. The organizer is the Ahrensburger Stadtforum e.V., the association of local retailers and businesses.
The festival area covers large parts of Ahrensburg's city center — from the Rondeel to the castle forecourt, along Hagener Allee and Große Straße. Over 200 stalls from regional and supra-regional retailers, restaurateurs, and clubs form a miles-long festival mile. The festival combines classic city marketing with a folk festival character: several stages are spread across the city center, the funfair area with rides occupies a larger area, and side streets feature special promotions by individual shops.
A hallmark of the festival is the performances by local clubs and schools: dance groups, choirs, music bands, sports club demonstrations (acrobatics, gymnastics, karate), school orchestras, and school dance groups alternate on the stages. This also makes the city festival a family event — many parents come because their children or grandchildren are in the program, and stay for the rest of the program.
The funfair area with rides, carousels, a Ferris wheel, and candy stalls caters to the classic folk festival needs of children and young people. In addition, there are special children's activities, craft workshops, and smaller interactive stages. Sunday opening hours in the city center extend the experience for shoppers.
Ahrensburg, with around 33,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the Stormarn district and is located about 20 kilometers northeast of Hamburg. The town's landmark is the 16th-century Renaissance water castle Ahrensburg — a brightly white building located on the western edge of the city center directly on the castle park. The city festival literally frames the castle: from the Rondeel and the train station, the festival area extends to the castle gate, and the city center architecture (brick buildings, market square with a neoclassical character) forms the backdrop.
The Ahrensburg City Festival 2026 runs for three days, filling the city center from the Rondeel to the castle. Over 200 stalls, several stages, a funfair area, and special promotions by retailers form the usual festival format. The organizer is Ahrensburger Stadtforum e.V.
