Traditional Advent market in front of the historic town hall of Nettetal-Lobberich
Lobberich is one of the five districts of the city of Nettetal, with around 42,000 inhabitants in the district of Viersen, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, directly on the Dutch border. With about 16,000 inhabitants, Lobberich is the largest district, the seat of the town hall, and the city's meeting point. The Alte Markt in front of the town hall, with its historic houses, forms the visual and social center.
The Adventsmarkt Lobberich traditionally takes place on the second Advent weekend — in 2026, presumably on December 12th and 13th. The market is not intended as a large event, but as a community festival that has grown organically: Regional vendors, clubs, schools, and initiatives from Nettetal and the Viersen district staff the stalls. The atmosphere is oriented towards Lower Rhine Advent culture — calm, heartfelt, with a tradition of beer, mulled wine, and lard bread rather than mass tourism.
The focus is on handicrafts: Advent wreaths, homemade candles, wood carvings, felt products, jewelry, books by local authors. In addition, clubs offer hot food and drinks — from potato pancakes with apple sauce to bratwurst and mushrooms, as well as vegetarian specialties. Mulled wine, children's punch, and candied almonds are must-haves. The proceeds from many club stalls go to charitable projects in the city of Nettetal.
The market does not have a large stage, but a rich accompanying program: brass bands, children's choirs, school performances, trombone choirs from the parishes, reading sessions for children in the town hall or nearby rooms. In the evening, the illuminated town hall facade and the Christmas tree on the square cast a glow. Those who visit the Lobberich Advent market come not for the big show — but for the experience of an entire neighborhood ushering in Christmas together.
Nettetal is the city of "five villages" by the Maas-Schwalm-Nette Nature Park — nestled between lakes, heathlands, and the Dutch border. Those who combine a visit to the Lobberich Advent market with a walk around De-Wittsee or Krickenbecker See will experience a classic Lower Rhine winter day — quiet, festive, and with a Nordic coolness.
