The Open-Air Museum as a Marketplace
The Lower Rhine Open-Air Museum Dorenburg in Grefrath is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most important open-air museums: historic buildings from the Lower Rhine region are assembled in a spacious parkland – half-timbered farmhouses, cottage gardens, mills, workshops, a forge, a bakery, an inn. In summer, it's a vibrant museum scene with animals and demonstrations; in Advent, the area transforms into a market whose atmosphere no other event in the Lower Rhine region can match.
The Dorenburg Moated Castle
The centerpiece of the market is the Dorenburg itself – a small moated castle with a bright tower and moat, first mentioned in the 12th century as a ministerial seat, later a noble residence. Today, the castle is a venue and, during the market, accessible with the Christmas market foyer in its interior rooms. Fairy lights between the trees, wood fires in pots in the forecourt, medieval music in the background – the castle looks like it's from an advent calendar from every angle.
Around 90 Exhibitors
The market brings together about 90 exhibitors, selected according to criteria set by MMR GmbH (the organizer), who explicitly focus on handmade products and sustainable production. This means: handmade Christmas tree baubles made of glass, wooden toys, nativity scenes, carvings, jewelry, natural soaps, beeswax candles, textile goods (traditional costumes, scarves, hats), traditional baked goods (Stutenkerle, Spekulatius, marzipan specialties), mulled wine from own breweries, honey, and incense. Some exhibitors come from the neighboring Netherlands, adding a Rhineland-Dutch charm to the market.
Two Advent Weekends
The market runs on two non-consecutive Advent weekends: the 2nd and 3rd Advent weekends. In 2026, these are December 4–7 and December 12–14, 2026 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday respectively). Opening hours vary by day of the week: Fridays and Saturdays 2:00 PM–9:00 PM (for adults with evening atmosphere), Sundays 11:00 AM–7:00 PM (family-friendly day).
On-site Program
Beyond just the market experience, there are several program highlights: live music with brass bands, acoustic acts, and choirs on a small stage; nativity scene exhibitions in the historic farmhouses (various styles, from Lower Rhine originals to Swabian nativity scenes); demonstrations in the forge and bakery – with real blacksmithing and baking processes; a children's area with craft activities and gnome fairy tale hours.
Grefrath on the Lower Rhine
Grefrath is located in the Viersen district, near the Dutch border and not far from Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. The region is famous for its Lower Rhine landscape with forests, old farmhouses, castles (Schloss Krickenbeck, Burg Linn), and the water sports region around the Niers river. Visitors to the Christmas market can extend their weekend with a walk through the Lower Rhine countryside.
