Three days of culinary world travel on Achern's Rathausplatz — Street food from trucks, grills, and woks
The Acherner Street Food Festival joins the wave of mobile culinary events that have dominated the festival calendar in southwestern Germany since the mid-2010s. The Rathausplatz in front of Achern's city hall (Am Markt 1) becomes a covered gourmet mile for three days, featuring nearly twenty food trucks, mobile counters, and specialty stands. You'll find Argentinian empanada street food, Syrian falafel wraps, Korean bulgogi from the grill, Neapolitan wood-fired pizza, Bavarian delicacies, and of course, traditional Baden Vesper (a light evening meal).
The organization is handled by the association Achern aktiv e.V., which has been regularly hosting cultural and gastronomic events in the city center for years. The festival format is accessible: free admission, free ordering, free tasting. Live music, DJ sets, and family programs frame the event. The Rathausplatz is a traffic-calmed zone and offers enough benches and standing tables to enjoy the food relaxed, even with children.
Achern is located on the western edge of the Black Forest, between Offenburg and Baden-Baden, and with just under 26,000 inhabitants, it is the second-largest city in the Ortenau district. The region — Baden-Württemberg, Ortenau — is famous for its wines (Sasbachwalden, Sasbach, Kappelrodeck) and Black Forest gastronomy. The Street Food Festival thus acts as an international counterpoint to the regional food culture: you can eat food truck specialties from Vietnam, Mexico, and Turkey, with views of the vineyards on the foothills of the Black Forest.
Expect around twenty food trucks, short waiting times during off-peak hours, and longer queues at midday and in the evening. The crowd is casual, consisting of families, groups, and solo foodies. Prices typically range between 6 and 12 Euros per dish, with drinks charged separately.
The 2026 edition focuses on the proven mix of international street food diversity and regional community culture. Achern aktiv e.V. invites a wide spectrum of food truck providers, from established mobile caterers in the region to specialized vendors from the southwestern German street food circuit.
The festival weekend in 2026 falls on the second weekend of May — ideal weather for strolls, long days, and spring evenings on the closed Rathausplatz. A DJ and small live acts will provide entertainment on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Free admission. Dishes typically €6–12 per portion, drinks €3–5. No deposit system for dishes — mostly reusable deposit cups.
Achern is located directly on the A 5 motorway (Achern exit). Rail connections via the Rheintalbahn line (Offenburg–Karlsruhe route), with Achern central station a five-minute walk from Rathausplatz.
