A Kirwa Tradition in the Vilstal
The Riedener Kirwa is a staple of the Upper Palatinate festival calendar. The market town of Rieden – with around 2,400 inhabitants in the Amberg-Sulzbach district – is located in the valley of the Vils, a tributary of the Naab river, nestled between forests and rolling hills. Here, the Kirwa is not just a religious festival, but also the most important market day of the year, and the Vilstalfest – the joint festival of the Vilstal communities – sometimes takes place concurrently.
The Kirwa Tree and the Kirwa Couples
As everywhere in the Franconian and Upper Palatinate regions, the Kirwa tree is the centerpiece of the festival. A decorated spruce is erected the evening before by the young men (the Kirwabou'n) and adorned with colorful ribbons, wreaths, and signs. On Sunday afternoon, the Kirwapaare (Kirwa couples) – men in traditional costume, women in Dirndl – dance the traditional dance under the tree, during which the head Kirwa couple is determined through a flower bouquet ritual.
Market Day and Direct Sales
What makes the Riedener Kirwa special is its strong market component. On Sunday morning, the village center transforms into a direct sales market: bakers with homemade Krapfen (doughnuts), shepherds with sausage and ham, cheesemakers, beekeepers, basket weavers, and woodworkers. The producers come primarily from the Vilstal and the Amberg-Sulzbach region, making the festival a showcase of regional direct sales.
Festival Tent with Brass Music and Frühschoppen
The classic Upper Palatinate festival atmosphere reigns in the tent: brass music from the local band, a Maß (liter) of beer on tap, Schäuferla (pork shoulder), Krautsalat (cabbage salad), Knödel (dumplings), and of course, the Kirwa-Krapfen. Sunday begins with the Frühschoppen after the festival service; in the afternoon, there's dance music, and in the evening, a Bavarian evening. If the Vilstalfest takes place separately (in some years), the program expands to include additional days.
Rieden – Market Town in the Vilstal
Rieden is the main town of the Vilstal communities and the seat of the municipal administration. Its location between Amberg and Schmidmühlen, at the transition from the Upper Palatinate hill country to the Bavarian Forest, makes it a natural meeting point. An old stone bridge crosses the Vils, the parish church stands in the town center, and the historic inns on the market square open their doors to festival guests during the Kirwa.
A Real Kirwa, Not a Tourist Spectacle
Like many Upper Palatinate Kirwa festivals, the Riedener Kirwa is primarily a celebration of the village community, not for mass tourism. That's precisely what makes it worth seeing: authentic traditional costumes, real Kirwabou'n and Kirwamoidla (Kirwa lads and lasses), traditional dances, regional products directly from the producer. Anyone who wants to experience Franconian-Upper Palatinate folk culture in its most original form should mark this Sunday in August on their calendar.
