Cologne Reads for 16 Days
lit.COLOGNE is one of the largest literary festivals in Europe and, since its founding in 2001, has been the literary showcase of the city of Cologne, which, as a kreisfreie Stadt in the administrative district of Cologne, is simultaneously North Rhine-Westphalia's economic and media metropolis. Between March 7 and 22, 2026, a total of 196 events will take place as part of the 26th edition, spread across more than a dozen venues — from the Flora to the WDR Funkhaus, the Schauspiel Köln, the Comedia Theater, and the Stadtgarten, to unusual locations like a Rhine ferry or the Cologne Police Headquarters.
Opening with Julian Barnes and Robert Habeck
The festival opening on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at the Flora will be a summit meeting of two prominent voices: British Booker Prize winner Julian Barnes (“The Sense of an Ending,” “England, England”) will meet former Vice-Chancellor and author Robert Habeck. The conversation about truth and fiction will be moderated by Frank Arnold. This opening event is representative of the festival's motto: an encounter between world literature and the political-essayistic voice of the present.
More Than 200 Voices from Around the World
The 2026 program brings together international and German-speaking stars: Nick Hornby, French author Édouard Louis (with actor Jannik Schümann), cabaret artist Hazel Brugger, author Joachim Löw, and cartoonist Katja Berlin with “Torten der Wahrheit” are among those announced. In addition, there will be readings, discussions, workshops, and performances in various genres — from novels to poetry, essays, non-fiction, and comics.
lit.kid.COLOGNE, lit.COLOGNE POP, DOK.COLOGNE
Running parallel to the main program are three special series: lit.kid.COLOGNE, with readings and workshops for children and young people, attracts over 27,000 young visitors each year. lit.COLOGNE POP on the weekend of March 6 and 7 is dedicated to pop literature, music, and poetry with a younger program. DOK.COLOGNE complements the festival with documentary subjects featuring film screenings and discussions — a crossover series between literature and documentary film.
Venues Throughout the City
Venues in 2026 include the Flora (opening), the WDR Funkhaus am Wallrafplatz, the Comedia Theater in Severinsviertel, the Schauspiel Köln in Depot 1, the Theater im Bauturm, the Volksbühne am Rudolfplatz, the Stadtgarten in Köln-Lindenthal, the Atelier Theater, and the E-Werk in Mülheim. With the Rhine ferry and the Police Headquarters, the festival in 2026 will also utilize two spectacular locations outside of classic cultural institutions.
Cologne as a European Literary Metropolis
More than 100,000 tickets sold per year — this figure makes lit.COLOGNE Europe's largest literary festival by visitor numbers. This has an impact far beyond the city limits: bookstores, publishers, and libraries in NRW have been aligning their spring programs with the two lit.COLOGNE weeks for years. The festival is produced by KölnMusik GmbH (a subsidiary of the City of Cologne) together with lit.COLOGNE GmbH.
