Anniversary year for the 900th birthday of the Premonstratensian monastery foundation of 1126
Rot an der Rot is a municipality with around 2,600 inhabitants in the district of Biberach (state of Baden-Württemberg, Upper Swabia) — characterized by one of the most significant Premonstratensian monastery foundations in Southern Germany. The monastery was founded in 1126 when Norbert of Xanten sent canons to the region. In 1140, the original settlement Mönchsroth became a full-fledged abbey, from which further daughter monasteries emerged — including Weißenau (1145) and Obermarchtal (1171). After wartime destruction, the Baroque monastery complex was rebuilt between 1681 and 1702. The St. Verena Church was built between 1777 and 1786 in the early Neoclassical style — a late masterpiece of monastic architecture shortly before secularization in 1803.
The anniversary year was opened on September 7, 2025, with a Pontifical Mass — celebrated by Abbot Leopold Baumberger of Stift Wilten, the only surviving daughter monastery of the Mönchsroth line. The actual anniversary year runs in 2026 with a concentration of events between June and October.
Accompanying the anniversary, the 'Klang-Welten' (Sound Worlds) concert series runs throughout 2026 — sacred music concerts with various ensembles in the Baroque monastery church, whose acoustics are among the best in Upper Swabia. The focus is on contemporary sacred works and the bridge between liturgical tradition and present-day composition.
In addition to the major highlights, there are pilgrimage routes along the former routes of the Premonstratensians, lectures on monastery history and spirituality, and special exhibitions on the architectural and art history of the monastery. A parallel pre-program includes the Fischerfest Haslach on May 24, 2026 (Pentecost weekend) as the kickoff for the summer season.
