Anniversary celebration of the Blankenheim Fire Brigade in the southern Harz foothills
Founded in 1886, the Volunteer Fire Brigade Blankenheim looks back on 140 years of voluntary fire protection and rescue services. The anniversary festival on October 3, 2026, continues a small but vibrant tradition: in Saxony-Anhalt's rural regions, fire brigade festivals are often the most important public event of the year – they replace what elsewhere is the Schützenfest (marksmen's festival) or Stadtfest (town festival).
Blankenheim is located in the Mansfeld-Südharz district, southwest of Sangerhausen, on the edge of the Goldene Aue. The municipality also includes the district of Klosterrode and belongs to the Goldene Aue association community. The region is characterized by former copper shale mining, viticulture on the southern Harz, and a landscape of traditions that keeps fire brigade festivals, local festivals, and Pentecost festivals alive for generations.
As with all larger fire brigade anniversaries in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, the typical sequence of events includes a ceremonial act, demonstration drills by the active brigade and the youth fire brigade, a festive parade of comrades from neighboring communities, and a convivial marquee conclusion in the evening. The anniversary falls on German Unity Day – a public holiday that lends the celebration additional attention.
October 3, 2026, coincides with German Unity Day – a fitting date for the anniversary of the Volunteer Fire Brigade Blankenheim. Even in the run-up, the municipality announces a preliminary celebration at the Rosarium Sangerhausen on July 11, 2026; however, the actual anniversary festival will take place on October 3 in Blankenheim itself.
The brigade has existed since 1886 and is – as in many communities in the Mansfeld-Südharz district – a central pillar of public life. The day will proceed classically: reception of guest brigades, ceremonial act with honors, demonstration drills (firefighting and rescue operations), a festive parade through the town, and in the evening, a convivial and relaxed conclusion in the marquee.
Status: Based on the announced key dates and the usual structures for fire brigade anniversaries in the region. An updated detailed program will be published before the date on blankenheim-klosterrode.de and the brigade's Facebook page.
