Traditional Pentecost festival with watering can drinking and parade in the Goldene Aue
If you want to experience tradition in its purest form, Emseloh is the place to be. This small district of Allstedt in the Mansfeld-Südharz district has been celebrating its Pentecost festival since 1881 – and in 2026, it will be the 145th time. The festival is upheld by the Emseloh Pfingstburschen, a fraternity that parades through the village in white shirts, sashes, and decorated watering cans, shaping the social life of the Goldene Aue.
The kickoff on Pentecost Friday, May 22nd, 2026, at 8 PM, is the watering can drinking ceremony. Beer is drunk from polished, flower-adorned watering cans – a ritual that has survived in only a few villages in the Mansfeld region. The 'Pfingstburschen' are accompanied musically by the Pölsfeld musicians. Afterwards, the festival moves to Emseloh Park, where the marquee, stage, and beer stands will be the focal point for four days.
Throughout the extended Pentecost weekend, there will be a parade on Pentecost Sunday, morning pint gatherings, dance evenings with live music, and a family program. Pentecost Monday offers a relaxed conclusion to the festival in the park. For those interested in the regional traditions of Saxony-Anhalt – between the Harz mountains, Kyffhäuser, and the Saale river – Emseloh offers a particularly authentic experience: not a tourist spectacle, but a village celebrating itself for almost 150 years.
Emseloh belongs to the town of Allstedt, where Thomas Müntzer delivered his famous sermon to the princes in 1524. Visitors to the Pentecost festival can easily combine their trip with a visit to Allstedt Castle and the town centre. In 2025/26, the region was the focus of the memorial year '500 Years of the Peasants' War'.
2026 marks the 145th anniversary of the Pfingstfest Emseloh – a rare milestone for a village festival in Saxony-Anhalt. The Emseloh Pfingstburschen 1881 are preparing their park and marquee with their usual care: four days of programming, watering cans polished and decorated, stage set up in the park.
The kickoff on Friday, May 22nd, is the most important ritual – the public watering can drinking. Throughout the weekend, the schedule includes a parade, morning pint gatherings, dance evenings, and a family program. Pentecost Monday offers a relaxed conclusion to the festival. Exact schedules for each day will be announced by the 'Pfingstburschen' via their social media channels and the Allstedt town hall.
