Traditional Christmas Market on the Kirchplatz and Lichterzauber with 3D Light Sculptures in the Old Town
Hann. Münden, the historic town at the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers forming the Weser, is one of Germany's most beautiful half-timbered towns with over 700 half-timbered houses. This unique setting is used in the 2026/27 pre-Christmas season for two combined events: the classic Christmas market on the Kirchplatz and the spectacular Lichterzauber Hann. Münden throughout the old town.
The Weihnachtsmarkt Hann. Münden on the central Kirchplatz in front of St. Blasius Church is a classic Christmas market with wooden huts, mulled wine, bratwurst, lard bread, potato pancakes, candied almonds, gingerbread, and stollen, as well as handicrafts – wooden items, candles, knitwear, jewelry, and toys. The market is open daily from 12 PM to 9 PM, closed only on the public holidays of December 24, 25, and 26.
The real highlight of the pre-Christmas season, however, is the Lichterzauber Hann. Münden. Oversized 3D light sculptures are installed throughout the old town: luminous animals, gigantic light flowers, illuminated stars, light portals, and thematic light scenes transform the half-timbered town into an immersive light landscape. The sculptures are illuminated daily from 5 PM to 10 PM and light up the old town until the end of January 2027.
The combination of the Christmas market (Nov 23–Dec 29) and the Lichterzauber (until the end of January 2027) ensures a significantly extended winter tourism season. While other Christmas markets end on December 24 or shortly after Christmas at the latest, Hann. Münden benefits from the Lichterzauber concept well into January.
The combination of the half-timbered house facades, narrow alleys, historic squares, and modern light installations creates a unique atmosphere that positions the town as a pre-Christmas destination beyond the region.
The 2026/27 edition continues the combination of Christmas market and Lichterzauber. The light installations will be set up in the weeks before the market and will illuminate the old town until the end of January 2027, securing Hann. Münden a significantly extended winter season.
