Community Advent Market in Bremen's South
When the doors of the Simon-Petrus-Kirche open after the family service and the stalls fill up in front of the church, Advent begins in Habenhausen. The community Advent market is small but heartfelt: sales stands with arts and crafts, artistic works, and culinary delicacies invite you to stroll, give gifts, and linger. The family service at 11 a.m. sets the mood for the day, after which the market around the church on Habenhauser Dorfstraße opens — usually from around 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. — for the community and neighbours.
The Advent market is supported by the Evangelical Church Community Arsten-Habenhausen, which includes the Simon-Petrus-Kirche in Habenhausen as well as the St. Johannes-Kirche in neighbouring Arsten. Both locations have been working closely together since the community merger. The market thrives on the voluntary commitment of the community and is an expression of lived neighbourliness in Bremen's south — a quiet, contemplative counterpoint to the large city centre markets on Bremen's Market Square.
The Simon-Petrus-Kirche is a relatively young church: it was consecrated on December 17, 1995, making it one of the youngest sacred buildings of the Evangelical Church of Bremen. Wuppertal architect Will Baltzer designed the modern brick and glass building, whose approximately 18-meter-high bell tower carries a peal of 24 bronze bells — the largest carillon west of the Weser. The patronage of the fisherman Peter is reflected in the furnishings, for example, in a pulpit fragment shaped like a fishing net. This bright, light-filled church provides an atmospheric setting for the Advent market.
Habenhausen is located to the left of the Weser in the south of Bremen and has retained a touch of village character with Habenhauser Dorfstraße. The Advent market fits this location: manageable, personal, and shaped by genuine community — a wonderful opportunity to discover the quieter, more contemplative sides of Hanseatic Advent culture in the state of Bremen.
In 2026, the Evangelical Church Community Arsten-Habenhausen once again invites you to the Advent market at the Simon-Petrus-Kirche. The event begins with a family service at 11:00 a.m., after which the market around the church on Habenhauser Dorfstraße will open with sales stands for arts and crafts, artistic works, and culinary delicacies. The exact date on the first Advent weekend will be announced by the community via the community office and its website. Admission is free.
The 2026 Advent market will follow the tried-and-tested schedule of the Arsten-Habenhausen community. The exact daily schedule with all program points will be announced by the community in late autumn 2026 via the community calendar and the community office — a detailed program is intentionally not provided. The documented, annually consistent schedule:
The market is supported by the voluntary commitment of the Evangelical Church Community Arsten-Habenhausen, which also includes the St. Johannes-Kirche in neighbouring Arsten.
Admission to the Advent market is free. Food, drinks, and goods from the stalls are available on-site for donations or at small prices; the proceeds benefit the community's work.
The Simon-Petrus-Kirche is located at Habenhauser Dorfstraße 42 in the Habenhausen district of Bremen. Accessible by bus lines towards Habenhausen/Arsten.
