140 Years of Fire Protection in the Würzburg Gau
Founded in 1886, the Eßfeld Volunteer Fire Brigade is one of the traditional brigades of the Lower Franconian market town of Bütthard. Eßfeld currently has around 400 inhabitants and is one of four districts of Bütthard in the Würzburg district, Bavaria. The 140th founding anniversary commemorates 14 decades of voluntary commitment to fire and disaster protection in the Würzburg Gau.
Festive Commemoration and Honors
As is customary for round anniversaries of Franconian brigades, the anniversary day is divided into several classic program components: a ceremonial act in the festival hall with welcoming remarks from the commanders, mayor, and district fire chief, honors for deserving active and passive members by the Würzburg District Fire Brigade Association, a festive church service, and a joint festive evening with the partner brigades from the Würzburg surrounding area.
Eßfeld — District of Bütthard
The market town of Bütthard is located about 25 kilometers southwest of Würzburg, at the transition from the Maingau to the Hohenlohe Plain. Eßfeld is accessible via the district road WÜ 35 and belongs to the Bütthard administrative community. The FFW Eßfeld is part of the local association structure that shapes village life in the sparsely populated region.
Voluntary Service in Rural Lower Franconia
Like many village brigades in the southern Würzburg district, the FFW Eßfeld relies on the commitment of a few active members. The anniversary commemorates this tradition and strengthens the cohesion of the brigades in the Würzburg Gau — also in the run-up to further fire brigade anniversaries in the region in early summer 2026.

On Wednesday, May 13, 2026, the Eßfeld Volunteer Fire Brigade invites you to its 140th founding anniversary in Eßfeld (district of Bütthard in the Würzburg district). The focus will be on a ceremonial act with welcoming remarks and honors for active and passive members, followed by a festive church service and a joint festive evening.
The event is officially scheduled with the Würzburg District Fire Brigade Association (Kreisfeuerwehrverband Würzburg e.V.) and is one of the spring anniversaries in 2026 in the Würzburg Gau — alongside anniversaries of other Lower Franconian brigades such as Stalldorf (May 29, 2026).

Getting There
Eßfeld is located 25 kilometers southwest of Würzburg. By car via the A 81 (Würzburg–Heilbronn, exit Tauberbischofsheim/Bütthard) and the district road WÜ 35. Public transport: Bus from Würzburg main station via Bütthard, then continue into the village.
Admission
Free admission to the ceremonial act and the festive evening. Registration for the festive commemoration is recommended via the FFW Eßfeld.
