About Orgeltage Wuppertal
Orgeltage Wuppertal — edition 2026
53rd Year of Organ Days
The 2026 Wuppertal Organ Days bring together the most important program points of the 53rd year in a compact May week. The 4th Wilhelm Sauer Organ Days begin on Sunday, May 10, at 3:30 PM in the Friedhofskirche Elberfeld — a venue appreciated for its Sauer organ and warm acoustic atmosphere.
Following this, several concerts from the Organ Accents series will take place on the grand Sauer organ of the Historische Stadthalle. The programs classically follow German Romanticism, the French school, and Baroque highlights. The traditional Organ Walk on Ascension Day — Thursday, May 14, 2026 — leads through the organ landscape of western Wuppertal (Sonnborn and Vohwinkel).

53 Years of Wuppertal Organ Days
Since 1973, the association Wuppertaler Orgeltage e.V. has been a pillar of classical music life in Wuppertal. What began as a festival format called 'Wuppertaler Orgeltage' has evolved over five decades into an all-year-round concert series, uniting several formats under one programmatic umbrella. 2025/2026 marks the 53rd year — a number that commands respect in the German organ scene.
Organ Accents — The Concert Series
The 'Orgel-Akzente' series is the association's ongoing concert format. The primary venue is the Historische Stadthalle Wuppertal — one of Germany's acoustically finest concert halls — and its grand Sauer organ, built in 1900 by Wilhelm Sauer (Frankfurt/Oder). Renowned organists from Germany and Europe perform on this queen of organs at irregular intervals: program highlights include German Romanticism (Reger, Liszt, Brahms arrangements), the French Romantic school (Widor, Vierne, Dupré), and major Baroque works (Bach, Buxtehude).
4th Wilhelm Sauer Organ Days 2026
Within the annual cycle, a compact festival stands out: the 4th Wilhelm Sauer Organ Days. Over several days, it brings together concerts and events centered around the work of Wilhelm Sauer — one of the most influential German organ builders of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Opening 2026: Sunday, May 10, at 3:30 PM in the Friedhofskirche Elberfeld — a smaller but acoustically excellent Wuppertal church that also houses a Sauer organ.
Organ Walk on Ascension Day
A beloved Wuppertal tradition: the Organ Walk on Ascension Day. Several organs in western Wuppertal (Sonnborn, Vohwinkel) open their doors — visitors walk or cycle from one organ to the next, enjoying a short concert or instrument presentation in each church. In 2026, Ascension Day falls on May 14 — the Organ Walk is expected to take place on this day.
Wuppertal and its Organs
Wuppertal is a significant point on the classical organ map of North Rhine-Westphalia: the Historische Stadthalle with its Sauer organ is a top-3 venue for organ concerts in NRW. Additionally, several Wuppertal churches possess historically important instruments — the Friedhofskirche Elberfeld, the Stadtkirche Sonnborn, the Hauptkirche Vohwinkel. The Wuppertaler Orgeltage association cultivates this organ-rich city area as a cultural entity through its programming.
