Traditional Schützenfest of the Artlenburg and surrounding area marksmen's guild at the Artlenburg shooting grounds
The Artlenburg and surrounding area marksmen's guild is the central body for marksmanship in Artlenburg and the surrounding villages. Like many marksmen's clubs in the Elbe valley, it cultivates sport shooting with small-bore rifles and air rifles, as well as an active club life with practice evenings, competitions, and social events. The annual Schützenfest is the social highlight and, at the same time, an open Volksfest (public festival) for the entire village.
The festival follows the proven program of North German marksmen's tradition: assembly in the morning, king's shooting at the shooting stand, festive procession through Artlenburg, king's proclamation with sash handover to the new majesties — marksmen's king, ladies' queen, and youth king —, king's dinner, and dance evening in the festival tent. Friendly marksmen's clubs from the Scharnebeck municipality and neighboring communities participate in the festive procession.
The Schützenfest is not just a club festival, but opens up to the entire village. Families will find carousels, bouncy castles, children's entertainment, and small game stations on the festival grounds. Food and drinks are served at typical Volksfest prices.
Artlenburg is located directly on the Elbe at the point where the historic Artlenburg Elbe bridge connects the Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein banks. Already in the Middle Ages, Artlenburg was an important crossing point, and in the 11th and 12th centuries, it was even briefly a bishop's seat. Today, the municipality is part of the Scharnebeck municipality and, with its rural character and historic location, shapes the southern crossing of the Lüneburg Elbe Marsh.
The festival Sunday begins with the assembly of club members in marksmen's uniform and the march to the shooting stand. King's shooting and other competitions fill the morning and early afternoon. Afterwards, the festive procession moves through Artlenburg, with friendly clubs from the Scharnebeck municipality participating. The king's proclamation in the festival tent in the late afternoon or evening is the emotional highlight — the new majesties receive their sashes and king's chains. The day concludes with a dance evening in the festival tent with a live band or DJ.
The exact detailed program for 2026 will be published by the marksmen's guild in advance. The structure follows the proven key points:
