World Heritage Festival with the opening of the exhibition «A Step Ahead» for the 125th anniversary
The Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2021. Founded from 1899 onwards by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, the artists' colony brought European avant-garde architects, painters, and designers such as Joseph Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens to Darmstadt around 1900. The result: a unique ensemble of Art Nouveau residential buildings, the iconic Hochzeitsturm (Wedding Tower), and the exhibition building — a structural vision of life and work reform in the spirit of 1900.
The World Heritage Festival was launched in 2022 after the UNESCO inscription and has taken place around German World Heritage Day (the first Sunday in June) ever since. It combines science, art, handicrafts, and a family program — all against the backdrop of the artists' houses, the exhibition building, and the Hochzeitsturm.
The 2026 edition is special: 125 years ago, in 1901, Mathildenhöhe presented its first major exhibition — a then-revolutionary concept of built residential houses, furnished, decorated, and inhabited by the artists themselves. The anniversary exhibition «A Step Ahead / Einen Schritt voraus» uses the four historic exhibitions (1901, 1904, 1908, 1914) as a starting point in four halls and places them in dialogue with contemporary international positions from design and art.
Frankfurt RheinMain bears the title World Design Capital in 2026 — and Darmstadt, with the World Heritage Festival, is a central program point. Designers, creatives, and World Heritage fans from all over the Rhine-Main region will gather on the hill that weekend.
Mathildenhöhe will be fully activated during the World Heritage weekend. The focus is on the opening of the exhibition «A Step Ahead / Einen Schritt voraus» in the exhibition building — the central anniversary show for the 125th anniversary of the historic 1901 exhibition. In four thematically organized halls, original works of applied and fine arts enter into a dialogue with international contemporary positions from design and art.
The festival's supporting program is freely accessible. Admission is charged for the exhibition «A Step Ahead» — tickets available via the official World Heritage website.
From Darmstadt main station, take bus line F to Mathildenhöhe or walk for about 20 minutes through the Paulusviertel. Parking in residential streets is difficult — public transport is recommended.
Most program points (illumination, open artists' houses, market) are free. Admission is charged for the special exhibition «A Step Ahead» in the exhibition building.
Reserve Saturday evening for the illumination, when Mathildenhöhe is bathed in a special light.
