25th Anniversary Edition at Historic Darmstadt Venues — «Into a Better World»
The Darmstadt Residenz Festival has been a firm fixture of summer in the South Hessian City of Science since 2001. The festival utilizes the historic venues of the former residential city of the Grand Duchy of Hesse — transforming Darmstadt into a classical music hub in the Rhine-Main region for just over two weeks.
2026 marks the 25th edition — an anniversary that will be celebrated with a special program. The motto: «Into a Better World», a tribute to hope, change, and collective responsibility in turbulent times. The motto runs through all concerts and venues.
What makes the Residenz Festival special is the diversity of its venues. Performances will be held at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mathildenhöhe (Open Air, main stage), in the baroque Jagdschloss Kranichstein (concerts for early music), in the Orangerie, the Kollegiengebäude, the intimate HoffArt-Theater, and the Rodensteiner Hof. Each venue has its own unique acoustic character.
The anniversary program oscillates between New Orleans Jazz and grand symphony concerts, from Bach to Italian Opera. Highlights include: Les Haricots Rouges for the opening (Jazz since 1963), Tom Gaebel with «Sinatra Summer Swing», a Schumann Piano Concerto with Darmstadt-based pianist Carmen Piazzini, a musical gala, and an Italian Opera Night featuring Verdi works. The ensemble Los Temperamentos will perform at Jagdschloss Kranichstein.
2026 is Schumann Year (birthday) and Weber Year — the Residenz Festival places both composers at the center with Schumann's Piano Concerto and Weber excerpts from «Der Freischütz».
Ten days of festival programming, an open-air stage at Mathildenhöhe, and five other venues. The complete 2026 program is published on the festival website; here are the confirmed highlights.
