The Plattenbau as an Ambivalent Legacy
The special exhibition »Wohnkomplex — Neubrandenburg. Art and Life in the Plattenbau« focuses on the East German Plattenbau — not as a nostalgic relic, nor as a mere socio-historical footnote, but as an ambivalent legacy of modernity. Between new identity formation and a culture of remembrance, the Kunstsammlung Neubrandenburg places the experience of living in this unique architecture at its center.
Over Twenty Artistic Positions
Loans and works from the collection of the Kunstsammlung Neubrandenburg are shown, illuminating change and continuity within the contradictions of East German transformation society. Over twenty artists are represented, including Karl-Heinz Adler, Sibylle Bergemann, Jan Brokof, and Manfred Butzmann. The media range from painting and sculpture to installation, photography, video, and printmaking.
An Award-Winning Concept
Curator Kito Nedo received the Justus Bier Prize for Curators 2026 for the exhibition and the accompanying publication »Wohnkomplex. Art and Life in the Plattenbau«. The theme gains particular relevance in Neubrandenburg: the city itself is characterized by large-scale Plattenbau settlements.
Kunstsammlung Neubrandenburg
The Kunstsammlung Neubrandenburg is one of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's significant art institutions. Neubrandenburg, the city of four gates, is located in the Mecklenburg Lake District. With »Wohnkomplex«, the institution is setting a cultural highlight of supra-regional appeal in 2026.
