One-day wine and Federweißer festival at Platz an der Lieser with onion cake, regional bands, and late summer atmosphere
Federweißer is one of Germany's few truly seasonal wine-drinking moments. This lightly sparkling, partially fermented must from the fresh harvest is only available for a few weeks – traditionally from early September to mid-October – and is celebrated with its own festivals in the wine regions during this time. The classic accompaniment is Zwiebelkuchen, a hearty yeast cake with onions and bacon.
The Wittlicher Federweißerfest on Saturday, September 13, 2026, is designed as a one-day event. The atmosphere changes throughout the day: in the afternoon, a calm, family-oriented crowd dominates, including hikers and day-trippers; in the evening, the square fills with a younger audience enjoying the live music and staying late at Platz an der Lieser.
Local vintners from the region offer new wine from the current vintage, as well as Federweißer and Federroter (red Federweißer) by the glass. The selection is broad – from dry Rieslings and semi-dry Müller-Thurgau to fruity rosé varieties. Additionally, there's white Federweißer and sometimes Federroter made from Pinot Noir grapes.
The wine offerings are complemented by Zwiebelkuchen from regional bakeries, along with Flammkuchen, Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), cheese platters, and sweet specialties. The combination of Federweißer and Zwiebelkuchen is the classic autumn pairing and a central culinary element of the festival.
Regional bands provide the musical backdrop. The program shifts from acoustic sets in the afternoon to livelier bands in the evening, without losing the warm, village-like character of the festival.
The 2026 edition follows the established concept. The festival starts in the late morning/early afternoon and runs until late evening, with different audience demographics throughout the day.
The exact schedule and band lineup for 2026 will be published on the Wittlich city website.
