Free rock open-air on the Eider beach in Süderstapel — music for all ages, right on the river
The Eider is the longest river in Schleswig-Holstein — a leisurely, meandering river through the marsh landscape that flows into the North Sea. Near Süderstapel, the Eider has a small Eider beach with a meadow, sand, and bushes — the ideal open-air stage for a summer festival. The organisers from Kunst & Kultur für Stapel e.V. launched the festival years ago as a contribution to the cultural revival of the Stapelholm villages.
The special feature of Rock an der Eider: free admission. The event is financed through the sale of drinks and snacks, club donations, and small sponsorship contributions. It is folk culture in the best sense: collectively supported, intergenerational, with bands that the audience can enjoy even without the pressure of festival passes.
The festival ran successfully for several years before 2023, then took a three-year break due to the pandemic and resource constraints, and relaunched in 2024 (or 2025). The revival shows how deeply the festival's character is embedded in the Stapelholm community.
Stapel (with Süderstapel as a district) is a small municipality with around 600 inhabitants in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg (Schleswig-Holstein). The landscape of Stapelholm refers to an agricultural marsh and geest area between the Eider and Treene rivers, with numerous small villages and farms. Kunst & Kultur für Stapel e.V. is one of the most active cultural associations in the region.
The festival day on August 8, 2026, brings rock music directly to the water's edge of the Eider in Süderstapel. As in previous years, local and national bands will play on an open-air stage; the audience sits on the sand and the meadow, with a view of the river and the marsh landscape.
The organiser Kunst & Kultur für Stapel e.V. runs the festival on a voluntary basis. The members take care of stage technology, drinks service, snacks, and security — all proceeds go to the club's fund for further cultural projects in the Stapelholm villages.
