Maibaum raising with dancing and folk festival on May 1st in the Stapelholm community
Seeth is a small community of just under 800 inhabitants in the Nordfriesland district of Schleswig-Holstein, in the historic Stapelholm region between the Eider, Treene, and Sorge rivers. An entirely rural landscape, characterized by marsh meadows, with ancient Frisian and Saxon settlement history.
May 1st is the date for Seeth: the village gathers for the Maibaum raising at the village community center. The pole is erected collectively, the Stapelholm dance and costume group performs the traditional dances of the region under the pole — a small, locally rooted spectacle that is rarely seen in this form anymore. In addition, there is grilled food, a cake buffet (donations from the village), and the convivial gathering that traditionally characterizes May festivals in northern Germany.
Those on their way to Sylt or Husum easily overlook Stapelholm. But those who stop and visit Seeth on May 1st will discover one of Schleswig-Holstein's least spectacular and most authentic landscapes. The community of Seeth cherishes its traditions with dedication — the Maibaumfest is an example of this.
The 2026 Maibaumfest was hosted by the Seeth community in its usual format — with collective Maypole raising, performances by the Stapelholm dance and costume group, grilling, and a cake buffet from village donations. The official community newsletter reported a sunny May afternoon and good public participation.
