Autumn market and ceramic fair in the Dutch town
Friedrichstadt is one of the most unusual towns in Northern Germany: founded in the 17th century by Dutch religious refugees, the typical Dutch architecture still shapes the cityscape today — narrow stepped gable houses, canals, bridges, market squares. This unique atmosphere makes the Friedrichstadt Autumn Magic more than just a market: the festival transforms the city center into a flowing connection of brick architecture, canal views, and market bustle.
The heart of the event is the Ceramic Fair on the Grüner Markt: potters and ceramic workshops from Germany, Denmark, and Belgium showcase their work. The spectrum ranges from classic tableware (bowls, jugs, plates) to artistic objects (sculptures, reliefs) to Raku firing and stoneware. Many exhibitors sell directly, while others demonstrate their techniques on the potter's wheel.
An important pillar of the program is the Stapelholm Costume and Folk Dance Group, which, as hosts, carries the cultural stage program. Other folk dance groups from all over Schleswig-Holstein are invited to present traditional dances in regional costumes on the market square. The program changes over the course of the two days — different groups perform at fixed slots.
An unusual highlight: Alpaca tours through Friedrichstadt's city center, led by a regional alpaca farm. The tours start from 12:00 PM and cost €10 per person — a calm, child-friendly alternative to the market hustle and bustle. The family program is complemented by a children's dance group, craft stations, and smaller hands-on activities.
Seasonal regional specialties are offered at the market itself:
Friedrichstadt is located in the North Friesland district at the mouth of the Eider and Treene rivers — the town is the gateway to the Eiderstedt peninsula with its thatched-roof houses, salt marshes, and lighthouses. With around 2,500 inhabitants, the town is small but has a cultural density that far exceeds its size. The Autumn Magic attracts visitors from the entire district and from Hamburg.
As in previous years, exhibitors will set up their sales and demonstration booths on the Grüner Markt. The Stapelholm Costume and Folk Dance Group coordinates the stage program, which is designed in rotation with invited groups from all over Schleswig-Holstein. Alpaca tours start regularly from 12:00 PM and lead through the historic old town.
