The Musical ROCKY
ROCKY is the stage adaptation of the legendary 1976 boxing film starring Sylvester Stallone. Composed by Stephen Flaherty with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (the duo won the Tony Award for "Ragtime"), ROCKY premiered worldwide in Hamburg in 2012 and ran on Broadway in 2014. The story:
- Rocky Balboa, a small-time boxer from Philadelphia, lives on the fringes of society
- A chance encounter leads to a fight against world champion Apollo Creed
- Parallel to this, the love story with the shy Adrian
- Classics like "Eye of the Tiger" and "Gonna Fly Now" as musical highlights
- Finale: the epic boxing match directly on stage with a live boxing ring
Stage and Production
The open-air stage in Tecklenburg is a natural stage in a semi-circular rock amphitheater:
- Seating for over 2,200 spectators
- Stage made of sandstone rock and wood with a revolving stage
- For ROCKY: a real boxing ring in the center of the stage
- Live band or orchestra accompanies the show
- Professional-level sound system and lighting design
Atmosphere: A Westphalian Classic
Tecklenburg is located in the Tecklenburger Land, a limestone basin between Münster and Osnabrück. The historic Tecklenburg Castle ruins directly above the stage, the medieval townscape with half-timbered houses and narrow alleys, the summer weather (or summer rain, quite common) – all of this makes the visit an experience far beyond the performance itself.
Tips for ROCKY
The play thrives on the physical presence of the lead actor (high-level boxing choreography) and the dramatic boxing match finale. In the German touring production, cast members change from tour to tour. Those who saw the original Hamburg cast will see a distinct production in Tecklenburg.
Other Productions in 2026
In addition to ROCKY, the following will be performed in 2026:
- SNOW WHITE AND ME: Children's play based on Snow White, premiere approx. May 2026
- DER MEDICUS: Stage adaptation of Noah Gordon's novel
- MUSICAL MEETS POP: Concert format with musical hits and pop classics
