2026 season on Germany's largest open-air stage: Premiere of ROCKY, the boxer musical based on the film with Sylvester Stallone – Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens
The Freilichtspiele Tecklenburg are a German theatre institution: since 1924, the town of Tecklenburg has been using its unique open-air stage, a natural stage carved into the sandstone rock with seating for over 2,200 spectators. Tecklenburg is thus considered Germany's largest open-air music theatre. Annually changing musical and theatre productions attract over 150,000 visitors to the small town in the Tecklenburger Land region.
The 2026 season runs from Friday, June 19, to Sunday, August 30, 2026. Premiere of the musical ROCKY on June 19 at 8:00 PM. Regular performance times:
Additionally, three other productions will run in 2026: SNOW WHITE AND ME (children's play), DER MEDICUS (based on Noah Gordon's novel), and MUSICAL MEETS POP (concert format).
ROCKY is the stage adaptation of the legendary 1976 boxing film starring Sylvester Stallone. Composed by Stephen Flaherty with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens (the duo won the Tony Award for "Ragtime"), ROCKY premiered worldwide in Hamburg in 2012 and ran on Broadway in 2014. The story:
The open-air stage in Tecklenburg is a natural stage in a semi-circular rock amphitheater:
Tecklenburg is located in the Tecklenburger Land, a limestone basin between Münster and Osnabrück. The historic Tecklenburg Castle ruins directly above the stage, the medieval townscape with half-timbered houses and narrow alleys, the summer weather (or summer rain, quite common) – all of this makes the visit an experience far beyond the performance itself.
The play thrives on the physical presence of the lead actor (high-level boxing choreography) and the dramatic boxing match finale. In the German touring production, cast members change from tour to tour. Those who saw the original Hamburg cast will see a distinct production in Tecklenburg.
In addition to ROCKY, the following will be performed in 2026:
ROCKY on Germany's largest open-air stage – a musical with uncompromising stage physics. Boxing ring in the center, live band, seating for 2,200 spectators in the natural amphitheater of the Tecklenburg Castle ruins. A production for musical fans and boxing enthusiasts alike.
