Festivities on the Borderline
The Grenzlandfest Überherrn is one of the characteristic Saarland folk festivals because its name is derived from its geography. The municipality of Überherrn is located in the Saarlouis district, directly on the French border — the nearest Lorraine town, Creutzwald, is only a few kilometers away. This border location shapes the character of the festival.
Who Celebrates
The Grenzlandfest is organized by the Aktionsgemeinschaft Überherrner Vereine e.V. (AUV) — an umbrella organization of local clubs. Sports clubs, carnival societies, the parish, and music clubs share stalls and tasks, with the proceeds flowing back to the clubs. Saarland solidarity, organized at the village level.
What's Offered
- Gastronomic Stalls: Bratwurst, Schwenker (Saarland specialty — charcoal-grilled pork), homemade salads, fries
- Live Bands in the evening
- Children's Program in the afternoon: Games and activities by local clubs
- Raffle for the benefit of the clubs
- Draft Beer and drinks
Überherrn — Border Community in Transition
Überherrn has a special history: until 1945, the western part of the municipality was still in France, and until 1957, the entire Saarland was politically closer to France than to Germany. The population speaks both languages more or less fluently, and the municipality maintains close contacts with its Lorraine neighbors. The Grenzlandfest is therefore not only a Saarland event but also a place where German and French visitors meet.
Location and Travel
The market square at the old train station — the traditional festival site — is centrally located in Überherrn. The municipality is well connected via the A620 to Saarbrücken and is also quickly accessible from Lorraine.
