Tecklenburg — the castle above the Tecklenburger Land

The Freilichtspiele Tecklenburg are one of Germany's most important open-air theaters — the open-air stage in the castle courtyard of historic Tecklenburg Castle offers around 2,200 seats in a semi-circle and is considered one of the most atmospheric stages in Northern Germany. For decades, the ensemble has produced a major musical production annually — and in 2026, it is DER MEDICUS.

DER MEDICUS — the novel, the musical

The novel of the same name by American author Noah Gordon (1986) is one of the best-selling novels of the 20th century — over 25 million copies worldwide, translated into over 30 languages. The story of the English orphan boy Rob Cole, who travels to Persia in the 11th century to study medicine with the legendary physician Avicenna in Isfahan, combines a historical setting, a love story, and epic narrative.

The music of Iván Macías

The musical version is based on the composition by Iván Macías — a Mexican composer who lends the work an oriental-Mediterranean sound. The work combines symphonic musical writing with folk elements, solo arias, and grand choir scenes.

Premiere date and schedule

The premiere is set for Friday, July 24, 2026, at 8:00 PM. Afterwards, the play will run with a total of around 25 performances until Sunday, September 13, 2026:

• July — 8 performances (Premiere July 24, then further evening performances)
• August — 9 evening performances, plus Sunday matinee on August 9 at 7:00 PM
• September — 6 final performances until September 13

The Freilichtbühne experience

The open-air stage is located in the courtyard of the historic Tecklenburg Castle — 200 meters above the Tecklenburger Land. The open-air atmosphere with a view of the night sky makes every visit an experience. In case of bad weather, performances are usually covered or postponed — the stage is semi-open.

Getting there

By car via the A30 (exit Lengerich/Tecklenburg). Parking around the castle. Tecklenburg itself is a picturesque half-timbered town with a historic market — a stroll the evening before is worthwhile.
