Berlin's Classical Opening Festival

When the Berlin classical season begins in September, Musikfest Berlin is already underway for two weeks — making it the firm link between the summer break and the winter season. Organized by the Berliner Festspiele in cooperation with the Stiftung Berliner Philharmoniker, it is one of the most important classical festivals in the German-speaking world, with a clear international ambition.

Anniversary Edition 2026: 75 Years of Berliner Festspiele

In 2026, the Berliner Festspiele will celebrate their 75th anniversary — and Musikfest is the main musical occasion for this jubilee. 36 events featuring around 40 concerts, 160 works by over 80 composers: a deliberately broad gesture that brings together classical, modern, and contemporary music.

Opening with Ligeti

Musikfest 2026 opens on August 28 at the Philharmonie Berlin with György Ligeti's opera “Le Grand Macabre" — a powerful satirical act on totalitarian rule, mismanagement, and corruption, symbolically performed in relation to the political climate of 2026. Ligeti is one of the most important composers of the 20th century; with “Le Grand Macabre" (premiered in 1978), he created one of his central works.

The main venue is the Philharmonie in the Kulturforum (Tiergarten district, Mitte borough) — right near Potsdamer Platz.
