Medieval illuminated old town on the slope of the Teutoburg Forest — Christmas market with castle atmosphere, December 4th to 6th, 2026
Tecklenburg is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most atmospheric small towns: a historic mountain town on the slope of the Teutoburg Forest, with half-timbered houses, cobblestone streets, a medieval castle, and a long history as a county residence. During Advent, the already picturesque old town becomes a festively illuminated backdrop — and the Tecklenburger Nikolausmarkt one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the Münsterland. The next edition will take place from Friday, December 4th to Sunday, December 6th, 2026.
The entire old town of Tecklenburg "shines in festive Christmas lights" (according to the official tourism description). Fairy lights in the alleys, illuminated half-timbered facades, candles in the windows. Its location on the hillside makes the effect unique: a new picture emerges from every perspective.
Chalets and stalls are spread across the historic market square, in the side streets, and at the castle: mulled wine, Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine with rum), bratwurst, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), candied almonds, Tecklenburger game sausage, Münsterland specialties, honey from regional beekeepers.
Tecklenburg is known as a city of artisans — many workshops and galleries are located in the old town. The Nikolausmarkt reinforces this tradition: ceramics, wood carving, glass, textile art, jewelry, Christmas decorations from regional workshops. The quality is usually significantly above the level of large markets.
Advent choirs and small concerts in the churches (St. Michaelis), brass choirs on the market square, barrel organ players in the alleys. The musical program fits the contemplative character of the market — no loudspeaker announcements.
Tecklenburg Castle (castle ruins) on the hilltop is part of the festival — as an atmospheric backdrop, with its own stalls and night tours. From here, you have a view over the Tecklenburger Land all the way to the Münsterland.
With around 9,000 inhabitants, Tecklenburg is one of the smallest and most beautiful small towns in the state — and the seat of the historic Tecklenburger Land, a cultural landscape in the northern Münsterland. Known for the Tecklenburg Open-Air Theatre (summer theater in the historic castle), the Hexenpfad (Witch's Trail) hiking path, and its location on the Hermannsweg. In Advent, the town reveals a particularly intimate, atmospheric side.
The 2026 edition runs from December 4th to 6th, 2026. Organized by the City of Tecklenburg and the Tecklenburg Tourist Information.
