3rd Idar-Oberstein Advent Glow

Schleiferplatz has been one of the most attractive squares in the gemstone city since the fundamental redesign of the Oberstein city center: an open, light-flooded square below the Felsenkirche, with trees, seating, and urban furniture that invites visitors to linger. During Advent, this square transforms into a festive market with a culinary focus as part of the Idar-Oberstein Advent Glow. The format deliberately differs from the large, classically designed Christmas markets in the region: instead of a multitude of classic wooden stalls, the organizers rely on a curated selection of vendors.

The culinary focus is on hand-picked mulled wines in various versions – classic red, white, blueberry, cherry, non-alcoholic – complemented by punch, hot chocolate, and winter cocktails. Selected food trucks and local restaurateurs offer hearty dishes from around the world: from classic German bratwurst, tarte flambée, and raclette to street food specialties and sweet temptations like candied almonds, waffles, and crepes. The stalls are arranged in a semicircle around the stage in the center of the square, so that performers and audience are not separated from each other.

The entertainment program is spread over the three festival days and is aimed at all generations. Bands, choirs, solo artists, and walking acts alternate on stage. Children will find a small carousel and hands-on activities in a dedicated area, often related to Christmas and Advent themes. For many Idar-Oberstein residents, visiting the Advent Glow has become a firm Advent ritual: a glass of mulled wine after work, a cozy chat with acquaintances, a photo in front of the illuminated Felsenkirche – the format strikes just the right tone for a winter gathering place in the city center.
