Over 125 Years of Tradition — Pentecost Fair right on the Treene River with Vintage Cars and Flea Market
Schwabstedt, with around 1,600 inhabitants, is a municipality in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein and is located on the Treene, one of the last largely natural rivers in Northern Europe. The river meanders through the geest and marsh landscape, past old farms, meadows, and forests. Schwabstedt itself is one of the oldest documented settlements in North Frisia (first mentioned in 1190) and an important regional center.
The Pfingstjahrmarkt Schwabstedt has been held for over 125 years — the first edition took place as early as 1901. This makes the festival one of the oldest folk festivals in the entire region and one of the few Pentecost fairs in Schleswig-Holstein that have preserved this tradition without interruption. The 125th edition will be celebrated in 2026.
The venue is the festival grounds directly on the Treene River — a magnificent location where the fairground and natural scenery meet. Around 40 showman businesses set up rides for all ages: carousels for the little ones, dodgems, spinning cups, and a Ferris wheel. In addition, there are food stalls with candied almonds, crêpes, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and sweets. The Pentecost weekend offers three days of folk festival atmosphere in a unique natural setting.
In addition to the fair, two extra events take place on the festival grounds and in the town center: a flea market with bric-a-brac, collectibles, and curiosities, and the popular vintage car meeting, which showcases historic cars and motorcycles from North Frisia and Schleswig-Holstein. Both attract thousands of additional visitors.
From May 23 to 25, 2026, the 125th edition of the Pfingstjahrmarkt will transform the festival grounds on the Treene River into a colorful fairground. Three days of folk festival atmosphere with rides, food stalls, a flea market, and a vintage car meeting — a tradition upheld annually since 1901, celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2026.
Around 40 showman businesses offer rides for all ages: carousels for the little ones, dodgems, spinning cups, a Ferris wheel, and shooting galleries for teenagers and adults. The food stalls provide visitors with candied almonds, crêpes, bratwurst, potato pancakes, and sweets.
