Arts and crafts market for ceramics in the Bremer Wallanlagen
When the meadow next to the Kunsthalle becomes a marketplace in mid-June, everything in Bremen revolves around ceramics for a whole weekend. Around 45 carefully selected workshops present their work at the Bremer Keramikmarkt – high-quality pieces made of porcelain, stoneware, and earthenware, from everyday dishes to vases and bowls to artistic individual pieces. The market is one of the most traditional of its kind in Northern Germany and has long been a fixed date in the calendar for ceramics enthusiasts from all over the Northwest.
The market was founded in 1990 by five ceramic artists. In the early years (1990 to 1993), it took place on a small stage in front of the theater at Goetheplatz, then on the grass area next to the Town Hall in the city center, and later behind the Kunsthalle. Since 2009, the market has found its permanent place on the meadow next to the Kunsthalle Am Altenwall – the open-air atmosphere in the green belt of the Wallanlagen has since become a cult event for both craftspeople and lovers of unique clay and porcelain items. The event is still supported today by a non-profit association, the Bremer Keramikmarkt e.V., whose team has changed over the years without losing the market's character.
The Bremer Keramikmarkt sees itself as a curated showcase for contemporary ceramic craftsmanship. The participating workshops are selected in advance, ensuring consistently high quality and a wide stylistic variety – from functional everyday ceramics to free artistic works. You can talk directly with the ceramic artists, have them explain their techniques, watch them at the wheel and glazing, and purchase pieces directly from the source. If you are looking for special tableware, a vase, or a gift, you will find works here that are not available in regular stores.
The Wallanlagen form a green park around Bremen's old town, right next to the Kunsthalle and the city walls, and just a few steps from the historic center with its Market Square, Town Hall, and Roland statue. This location makes the ceramics market a relaxed summer destination in the heart of the Hanseatic city: crafts in the green, in close proximity to Bremen's traditional city center. Free admission invites you to stroll, making it easy to combine a visit with a walk through the old town or along the Weser River.
At its 37th edition, around 45 selected ceramic workshops will present their high-quality works in porcelain, stoneware, and earthenware on the meadow next to the Kunsthalle Am Altenwall. Open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. Applications from interested ceramic artists were possible until January 15, 2026.
