Patronal festival of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising on Domberg hill
Saint Corbinian is considered a missionary of faith and the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. His tomb and reliquary shrine are located in the Cathedral of Our Lady on Freising's Domberg hill, the spiritual center of the Upper Bavarian city of Freising in the Freising district. The Korbiniansfest, embedded in the Korbinians pilgrimage, commemorates the saint's work annually and is one of Bavaria's most significant religious festivals.
The atmospheric highlight is the torchlight procession: with the shrine of Saint Corbinian, the festive procession moves from the Church of the Holy Spirit up to Domberg hill, accompanied by candlelight and Vespers in the Cathedral of Our Lady. The solemn conclusion is the celebratory Mass in Freising Cathedral of Our Lady with the Archbishop, to which pilgrimage groups and pilgrims from the entire Archdiocese travel.
Around the religious events, the city of Freising organizes the Korbiniansmarkt around the Roider-Jackl fountain: stalls from partner cities offer arts and crafts, decorative items, gifts, and regional specialties – a popular meeting point a month before Christmas. The cultural Partners' Evening brings together guests from Freising's European partner cities and underscores the city's international connections.
The Korbiniansfest combines deep religious tradition with urban festival culture. It is simultaneously a pilgrimage, a gathering festival, and a market experience – a fixed date in late autumn that bathes the cathedral city of Freising in a special light.
The Korbinians pilgrimage 2026 will bring pilgrims and believers to Freising's Domberg hill around November 21 and 22. On Saturday, November 21, 2026, at 5:30 PM, the torchlight procession with the shrine of Saint Corbinian will proceed from the Church of the Holy Spirit up to Domberg hill; afterwards, Auxiliary Bishop Wolfgang Bischof will celebrate an ecumenical Korbinians Vespers in the Cathedral of Our Lady.
The highlight is the celebratory Mass in Freising's Cathedral of Our Lady with Cardinal Reinhard Marx on Sunday, November 22. Under the motto 'Pilgrims of Hope,' a blessing ceremony for young and old will also take place in the cathedral. Alongside the religious celebrations, the Korbiniansmarkt with arts and crafts and specialties invites visitors, complemented by the Partners' Evening with guests from Freising's partner cities.
Masses, the torchlight procession, and visits to the Korbiniansmarkt are free of charge.
Freising is located north of Munich and is easily accessible by the S-Bahn line S1 (Munich–Freising) and via the A92 motorway. From Freising train station, it is about a 15-minute walk to Domberg hill. Munich Airport is located in the Freising district.
The Masses, the torchlight procession, and visits to the Korbiniansmarkt are free of charge.
The torchlight procession in the evening offers a particularly atmospheric experience – warm clothing is recommended for the late autumn weather.
