Advent market in the Hermann Hesse town of Calw with over 70 stalls in the historic half-timbered core
Calw – with just under 24,000 inhabitants, a medium-sized center in the Calw district – is the birthplace of Hermann Hesse (1877). The town with its famous market square, narrow alleys, and intact half-timbered old town nestled between the Nagold and Nordrach rivers forms one of Southern Germany's most fairytale-like backdrops. During Advent, this fairytale atmosphere becomes the brand of the "Märchenhaftes Calw" Christmas market.
The stalls – wooden huts in traditional Black Forest style – are spread throughout the historic city center: from the market square in front of the town hall, along Marktstraße, to Calwer Kirchturmplatz, and into the side streets. The exhibitors offer a classic Advent selection with a focus on quality: wooden figures, Advent wreaths and arrangements, Christmas tree ornaments, handmade candles, nativity scenes, chocolate specialties, smoked ham, regional cheese from the Black Forest, honey products.
The musical program is spread across the town. Several stages or performance points with brass ensembles, local bands, trombone choirs, and school choirs create an Advent mood. You can stroll from one market point to the next, encountering different musical atmospheres everywhere.
An unusual tradition: On Friday evening, there's a dance party with a DJ on the market square. This adds a modern touch to the otherwise classic Advent market format – and makes the Calw market a meeting point for a younger audience on the weekend.
The offerings for children are extensive. A nostalgic carousel spins in the market square, a miniature train chugs through the alleys, and a petting zoo with alpacas (a Calw specialty) invites interaction. The "Angel Post" is a unique concept: children write letters to their parents or grandparents, which are collected and delivered by "angels" (helpers in costume). New starting in 2026: the "Gnome Garden" – a dedicated play area with gnome houses and hands-on activities.
The gastronomic offerings range from classic Advent market staples (mulled wine, bratwurst, fries, roasted chestnuts) to Black Forest specialties: Black Forest ham on farmer's bread, smoked trout from Nagold fish farms, pork shoulder with potato salad, Hesse stew (Hermann Hesse's favorite dish), crêpes, mulled wine made from Black Forest wine, children's punch.
Hermann Hesse's birthplace on Marktstraße is a year-round attraction. During Advent, his work is specially showcased in some shop windows, bookstores, and the Hermann Hesse Museum. Readings from "Demian," "Steppenwolf," and "The Glass Bead Game" occasionally accompany the market weekend.
The market opens on Thursday, November 26th, 2026 (eve of the 1st Advent) at 3 PM and runs until Sunday, November 30th (1st Advent) until 6 PM. Thus, the 2026 edition falls entirely on the first Advent weekend – the start of the Southern German Advent season.
