Festival in honour of the Nobel Prize laureate for literature in the Hirsau monastery ruins
Hermann Hesse, one of the most important German-language writers of the 20th century and Nobel Prize laureate in 1946, was born in Calw in 1877. His hometown has honoured him for decades — with the Hermann Hesse Museum on the market square, the Hesse Fountain, the Hermann Hesse School, and a series of cultural-historical events. One of the more recent formats is the Hermann Hesse Festival, which has been successfully held in the Hirsau monastery ruins (a district of Calw) in recent years.
The festival's main evening on August 1, 2026, is closely linked to the Panikpreis, a song competition by the Udo Lindenberg Foundation that promotes musical individualists and creative songwriters with predominantly German lyrics. The top three prize winners receive €5,000 each, and places 4–6 receive €2,500 each. A special prize for "Best Hermann Hesse Setting" (€1,000) honours the best musical adaptation of Hesse's poems or novel passages. Application deadline 2026: April 21, 2026.
The Hirsau monastery ruins are among the most impressive medieval ruins in southern Germany. The Benedictine monastery of St. Peter and Paul, founded in the 11th century, was one of the most important monasteries in Europe during the height of the Hirsau Reformation. The Romanesque walls, the late Gothic cloister, and the remains of the Marienkapelle form an extraordinary backdrop for open-air concerts. The acoustics of the ruins, the mix of historical substance and open-air atmosphere, make the venue unique.
The Hermann Hesse Festival is part of the Calw Monastery Summer, a concert series in the Hirsau monastery ruins from July 30 to August 9, 2026. Concerts take place every evening from 8:00 PM to 11:00 PM during this period — the main evening of the Hermann Hesse Festival on August 1 is one of the most popular. The programme for the entire concert series varies between pop, jazz, classical music, and literary-musical productions.
Calw, a town of around 23,000 inhabitants in the district of Calw, is located in the Northern Black Forest on the Nagold River. The historic old town with its narrow alleys, half-timbered houses, and market square shapes the image of the town — and shaped Hermann Hesse's childhood and his literary work. The urban centres he processed literarily in "The Prodigy", "Demian", or "The Glass Bead Game" are still identifiable in Calw and Hirsau today. Visitors to the festival should plan time for a stroll through Calw's old town and a visit to the Hermann Hesse Museum.
On Saturday, August 1, 2026, starting at 8:00 PM, the six finalists of the 2026 Panikpreis will perform in the Hirsau monastery ruins — the top three prize winners (prize money €5,000 each) and places 4–6 (each €2,500). The Panikpreis is a song competition by the Udo Lindenberg Foundation that honours musical individualists and creative songwriters with predominantly German lyrics — songwriters without major label contracts who make thoughtful, independent, and socially engaged music.
The performances on the main evening are the culmination of the competition year: each of the six acts plays a concert set, offers insight into their work, and presents themselves to the Calw audience. A special prize for "Best Hermann Hesse Setting" (€1,000) honours the best musical adaptation of Hesse's poems.
