Courtyard Estate Wine Festival in Mainz's southernmost district with the motto 'Hoftor auf!' (Courtyard Gates Open!)
Ebersheim is the southernmost district of Mainz and is already located on the high plateau of the Rheinhessen wine landscape. Only incorporated into Mainz in 1969, the village has largely retained its rural character and its agricultural, particularly wine-growing, identity to this day. Several wineries with centuries-old traditions shape the village's appearance — pressing houses, vaulted cellars, and rubble-stone walls in close proximity to modern vinification facilities.
The Weinfest im Dorf turns this spatial structure into a unique festival concept. Instead of a central festival meadow, the wine estates themselves become festival venues. The motto 'Hoftor auf!' is the program: family wineries open their gates, set up tables and benches in the inner courtyard, hang fairy lights in the courtyards and trees, decorate with vine leaves, and serve their own wines directly at the place of origin.
The important Ebersheim vineyard sites — Hüttberg, Sand, and Weinkeller — are explicitly highlighted in the program. Riesling, Pinot Noir, Silvaner, and Pinot Blanc of high quality grow in these locations. The participating Mainz wine families from Ebersheim present not only their current vintages but also reserves, late harvests, and selected wines.
Visitors move freely between the courtyards — a festival glass and a festival map are usually offered as a complete package. The tasting is accompanied by classic Rheinhessen specialties: Spundekäs (cheese spread), Flammkuchen (flatbread), grilled sausages, Handkäs (cheese with onions and vinaigrette), quiches, and vegetarian options. Some courtyards offer musical programs — from acoustic singer-songwriter sets to dialect songs.
The Weinfest im Dorf carries the quality seal Rheinhessen AUSGEZEICHNET and is a perfect destination for wine lovers who want to experience Rheinhessen beyond the tasting fair — directly in the village, directly in the courtyard, directly in conversation with the wine-growing family.
The complete program for 2026, including the list of participating wine estates, will be published by the Mainz vintners in early summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: Friday evening opening with a welcome courtyard visit and the first open courtyards, Saturday and Sunday full-day opening of the wine estates with musical accompaniment in selected courtyards, Sunday ecumenical brunch, Monday with a quieter end to the day.
