About Salzwiesn

Salzwiesn Carolinensiel is „the little Oktoberfest in the Wadden Land“. From August 21st to 23rd, 2026, Carolinensiel will transform into an East Frisian-Bavarian festival mile for three days. A festival tent will be set up, traditional costumes will dominate the streetscape, and brass band music will sound from the harbour. The name „Salzwiesn“ is a charming play on words between Wiesn (Munich) and Salzwiesen (salt marshes) – a tribute to Bavarian festival tradition and East Frisian geography at the same time. On the programme: Masskrugstemmen (stein holding), Bavarian specialities, live brass band music, traditional costume competition, and East Frisian accents. A deliberately staged exception in the East Frisian festival calendar.

Bavaria in the Wadden Land – a play on words with substance

The name „Salzwiesn“ is a successful play on words: it combines the famous Munich „Wiesn“ (the Oktoberfest) with the Salzwiesen – those marshy coastal meadows found in the transition to the Wadden Sea, which are a typical landscape element of the East Frisian North Sea coast. „Salzwiesn Carolinensiel“ is therefore not just an event, but also a likeable linguistic staging.

The Little Oktoberfest in the Wadden Land

From August 21st to 23rd, 2026, Carolinensiel will transform into a three-day festival mile with a Bavarian atmosphere. Even though the real Munich Oktoberfest doesn't start until September, the Salzwiesn brings the Bavarian festival feeling to East Frisia in August – an early mini-Oktoberfest with a local touch.

Festival Tent, Traditional Costumes, and Brass Band Music

The typical Oktoberfest elements are all present:

  • Festival tent – a large beer tent with beer benches and a stage
  • Traditional costumes – Dirndl, Lederhosen, and the like dominate the streetscape
  • Brass band music – traditional Bavarian sounds in the festival tent
  • Masskrugstemmen – the classic competition to see who can hold a full litre beer mug outstretched the longest
  • Bavarian specialities – Pretzels, Weißwurst (white sausages), Hendl (roast chicken), Maß (litre of beer)

East Frisian Accents

What distinguishes the Salzwiesn from a pure Oktoberfest copy are the East Frisian accents: possibly an East Frisian variant of Masskrugstemmen, regional specialities alongside Bavarian classics, a greeting in Low German, or a shanty performance between the brass band sets. This creative mix gives the event its own character.

Three Days of Festival Atmosphere

Over the three days – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday – a diverse programme of concerts, competitions, culinary offerings, and traditional costume contests unfolds. The Salzwiesn is a deliberate exception in the East Frisian festival calendar and belongs to the region's younger, more creative formats.

Salzwiesn — edition 2026

The Salzwiesn Carolinensiel 2026 takes place from August 21st to 23rd – for three days, Carolinensiel transforms into an East Frisian-Bavarian festival mile. "The little Oktoberfest in the Wadden Land" combines Bavarian festival tradition (festival tent, traditional costumes, brass band music, Masskrugstemmen) with East Frisian accents. Planned are concerts with traditional brass band music, Masskrugstemmen competitions, a traditional costume parade, Bavarian and regional specialities. A deliberately staged exception in the East Frisian festival calendar. Organiser: Nordseebad Carolinensiel-Harlesiel GmbH.

The Salzwiesn is one of Carolinensiel's younger and more creative festival formats. With the play on words between Munich's Wiesn and East Frisian salt marshes, the event is a charming staging both linguistically and conceptually.

The exact programme for 2026 and the artists will be published by the organiser in advance.
