Largest wine festival in the Markgräflerland — three days of wine, music, and tradition under the festival tent
The Winzerfest Efringen-Kirchen was launched in 1950 and is now one of the established events among Southern Baden wine festivals. It is the largest wine festival in the Markgräflerland — the region between Freiburg and Basel, known for its Gutedel, Müller-Thurgau, and Spätburgunder wines. Five local clubs are jointly responsible for organizing the festival, managing it themselves for decades and financing their club activities with the proceeds.
The venue is the traditional festival grounds on the outskirts of Efringen-Kirchen, the largest municipality in the district of Lörrach. The striking 50x50 meter festival tent offers seating for around 2,000 guests and is the heart of the event. In front of and around it are wine stands from local winemakers and wineries, as well as catering stands from the participating clubs. In good weather, the outdoor area also fills with festival benches — the Markgräfler late summer climate almost every year ensures mild evenings.
Wine is the focus: Local wineries and the Winzerkeller serve what the region has to offer — from freshly fermenting new wine (Sturm) to dry Gutedel and Spätburgunder white wines, and sparkling wines from local vines. Accompanying these are classics of Baden cuisine: Wurstsalat (sausage salad), Flammkuchen (flatbread), Schäufele (pork shoulder), Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart), Bibeleskäs (quark cheese dip). The Markgräflerland is one of Germany's southernmost wine-growing regions; the mild climate on the Rhine produces full-bodied, harmonious wines that can be tasted here in their original environment.
Efringen-Kirchen (Lörrach district, AGS-Kreis 08336) is located in the border triangle between Germany, France, and Switzerland. From the festival grounds, the view extends over vineyards to the Vosges mountains and the Black Forest. The municipality, with its nine districts (including Egringen, Istein, and Welmlingen), has around 8,500 inhabitants and belongs to the classic Markgräfler wine-growing region. Its location on the Rhine knee and on the Basel–Freiburg railway line makes the Winzerfest easily accessible for Swiss and Alsatian guests.
In addition to wine and music, the program is rich in highlights: Show evenings with live bands and dance music fill Friday and Saturday nights, while Sunday is dedicated to the traditional Dorfmäss (morning pint with brass music) and a family-friendly program with a children's afternoon. An Oldtimer meeting often complements the program, attracting fans of historic vehicles from the region.
From Friday, September 25 to Sunday, September 27, 2026, the festival grounds “Beim Breitenstein” will once again become the central wine stage of the Markgräflerland. The 50x50 meter festival tent with around 2,000 seats will once again be the venue for three days of wine, Baden cuisine, and music. The organizers are five local clubs who jointly support the festival.
Current program details will be published in the summer of 2026 on winzerfest-efringen-kirchen.de. Admission is free.
