Architecture, Design, and Family Program in the World's Architecture Park
The Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein is one of the most remarkable architecture parks in the world. Since the late 1980s, buildings by Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Tadao Andō, Álvaro Siza, Herzog & de Meuron, Sanaa, Renzo Piano, Buckminster Fuller, Jean Prouvé, and many others have been assembled on the premises of the furniture company Vitra. The annual summer festival on the first weekend of July is an open house — with free admission, the public explores the collection and the current exhibition program.
The 2026 Summer Festival runs on Saturday, July 4, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It is free and accessible without registration. The entire campus becomes an experience trail — from Zaha Hadid's iconic Fire Station (her first realized architecture worldwide) to Frank Gehry's Vitra Design Museum and Herzog & de Meuron's Vitra Schaudepot.
The Vitra Design Museum is hosting the exhibition „Hella Jongerius: Whispering Things" — a retrospective of the Dutch designer focusing on materials, colors, and experimental furniture textiles. The Vitra Schaudepot features „Verner Panton: Shape, Colour, Space" — a tribute to the Danish designer of the famous Panton Chair and countless other design icons of the 1960s and 70s.
Free short guided tours of the Tane Garden House (a contemporary wooden architecture by the Japanese studio Tane) and the Khudi Bari (a lightweight emergency shelter concept by the Bangladeshi-German architect Marina Tabassum) will take place several times daily. Workshops between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM include notebook binding, animal sculptures made from campus materials, and habitat building for children and families.
A vintage furniture flea market is taking place in Zaha Hadid's Fire Station — older Vitra products and design pieces at special prices. A scavenger hunt is organized in the Oudolf Garden (designed by Dutch garden designer Piet Oudolf). Face painting, an outdoor play area, and live music on the lawn under Buckminster Fuller's geodesic dome characterize the family-friendly aspect.
The Summer Festival on July 4, 2026, is the central family event of the Vitra Campus. Eight hours of programming with free admission — suitable for family outings or architectural pilgrimages.
The campus showcases its iconic buildings (Hadid, Gehry, Andō, Herzog & de Meuron, Sanaa, Siza) alongside the current special exhibitions in the Design Museum and Schaudepot.
Completely free admission to the Summer Festival. Workshops, guided tours, scavenger hunt, face painting — all included. Food trucks at usual market prices. Eames Café and Schaudepot Café open as usual. The vintage flea market has no entrance fee; only purchases are subject to charge.
